LET'S TALK BUSINESS Little
things really add up
(NC)—Often, the fine line between the small business doldrums
and a business that's booming is the entrepreneur who pays extra
attention to the people in the workplace. Here are some simple yet
savvy gestures, courtesy of Alterna Savings to show
how you put the value of good people first:
o Send handwritten thank you notes to your customers,
prospects, and colleagues.
o Help people achieve their own success.
o Congratulate people – with handwritten notes.
o Nominate deserving people for awards – and tell them you are
doing it.
o Apologize when you make a mistake.

RECIPES
Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
Ingredients:
Pumpkin seeds
Salt
Method:
When you are cleaning your pumpkin for carving it, save the seeds
in a bowl. Do not wash your seeds prior to roasting. Washing can
remove some of the flavor.
Remove the seeds from the strings and place a single layer on a
cookie sheet. Try and make an even layer, the less they lay on
each other, the better they can bake.
Add salt to taste and bake at 250 degrees until dry, stirring
occasionally. Bake for about 15 to 30 minutes or until the start
to turn a very light gold.

PETS
Difficulties with your Pet
Most pet owners experience difficulties with their pets from time
to time. Many animals, especially cats can be very moody and you
usually can’t expect your dog or cat to always behave properly. If
your pet has become more than a handful, here are some tips to
help you out when you have difficulties with your pet.
If your pet is usually well behaved and suddenly acting strange it
is recommended that you have your pet checked out by a vet.
Sometimes cats or dogs misbehave because they are suffering from a
medical ailment or an injury that you are not aware of. Usually a
thorough check up will determine if your dog or cat is ill.
If you are having difficulties with your pet, you can also
determine if there is anything new that your dog or cat is not
happy with including another new pet, new home or even a new diet
can affect your pets behavior. Just like people, pets like comfort
and too much change can make them unhappy and nervous.
If you have difficulties with your pet and you ruled out both
illness and change, then you should consider dog training or
behavior modification for cats. There are plenty of books, guides
and services that can help you get your pet back in line and well
behaved. Most guides and training services are very affordable and
don’t require lots of time to administer. If you are having
difficulties with your pet, read the above suggestions on how you
can stop difficulties with your pet.

PARENTING
Simple Solutions for Head Lice
It's a common misconception that head lice are associated with
unsanitary conditions. In fact, they prefer a clean environment in
which to live and hatch their eggs (called nits).
Fortunately, by following some simple rules you can help minimize
the rate of infestation at home and school.
Check everyone's hair and scalp on a regular basis. Choose a time
every week to check for lice, Friday evenings when everyone is
brushing their teeth and getting ready for bed for example and
you're in the bathroom under bright lights.
Encourage your children not to share combs and brushes, towels
and clothing with their friends; even their "best" friends can get
lice.
Keep watch for symptoms of lice. Persistent itching, especially
around the neck and ears, is a sign that lice could be present.
Remember however, that your child can have lice several weeks before
they start to itch.
What to look for. Examine your child's head for lice and nits by
parting the hair in narrow, vertical sections with a comb. Make sure
you are working in a well lit area. Wet the hair and apply a
conditioner to ease the comb through the hair; this also slows live
lice down and makes it easier to find them. You are looking for
grayish white to light brown, tiny flat insects that are 1 to 2 mm
in length. They like to live on the hair and scalp. They survive by
feeding off the blood of their host. The eggs, called nits, are
attached to the hair shaft, and are usually found about a quarter
inch from the scalp in a halo pattern around the temples, above the
ears or at the nape of the neck. Nits are brownish in colour before
they hatch; after they hatch, the remaining shell looks white or
clear
Begin treatment right away, and inform the parents of your
child's friends and your child's school that your child has lice.
Some schools have a "no nit" policy which means that your child
cannot go back to school until the nits are gone. It's another
reason to begin an effective treatment immediately. Health Canada
approved, effective lice treatments include pyrethrin based
shampoo/conditioners (eg. R&C) which are derived from chrysanthemum
flowers and permethrin based cr?me rinses (eg. Kwellada-P) which are
synthetically derived. These treatments are available in pharmacies
without a prescription. Your pharmacist can help you determine which
treatment is right for your child.
Prevent re-infestation. Make sure that if your child does get
lice, you follow the directions on the package very carefully, which
includes completing a second application seven to 10 days later to
kill any newly hatched lice. No head lice treatment product kills
100% of the eggs, so in between applications, it's important to
continue to comb your child's hair on a daily basis with a nit comb
to remove any nits and newly hatched lice.
In addition to treating your child, you will need to screen other
family members to make sure no one else has become infested.
Moreover, because lice can survive up to 48 hours at room
temperature, you will need to wash clothing, including hats, hair
bands, towels and bed linens that you suspect have come in contact
with the infected person. Wash in very hot water and dry on the hot
cycle for at least 20 minutes.
