HOME BUDGETING

How to lower your heating costs this winter

(NC)—Here is some helpful home maintenance advice from the "Manage My Home" experts at Sears:

• Make sure that your furnace is in good operating condition.

• Check the attic for adequate insulation and ventilation.

• Reduce air leakage into your home with caulking and weather stripping (this makes a significant difference).

• Use a setback thermostat allowing you to drop the temperature when you are not home. Program the thermostat to drop to 17-18C (64-65F) during the weekdays and maintain your house at 20C (68F) during the evening and over-night when you are at home.

• Keep the doors of empty/unused rooms closed to conserve energy.

• Have your heating unit checked periodically by a professional service person to make sure it is operating at peak energy efficiency.

Manage My Home is an online service made available to you by Sears HomeCentral, in association with Carson, Dunlop and Associates. This Sears HomeCentral service makes day-to-day home maintenance easier because it gives you a fast, convenient and easy-to-use on-line service, consisting of an annual maintenance program and a homeowner's manual customized to the unique features of your home.

HALLOWEEN CRAFTS

Halloween Goodie Bags

Materials:

Brown grocery bag
felt pumpkin cutouts (or orange felt)
black cat cutouts (or black felt)
felt ghost cutout (or white felt)
wiggly eyes (if you use felt)
craft sticks
dark blue construction paper
brown construction paper
yellow felt
Halloween ribbon (1"wide)
glue

Instructions:

Cut off top part of bag (you just want it tall enough to fit the blue construction at the top & the craft sticks on the bottom). Glue blue construction paper to bag. You now have a *scene*------a night sky & picket fence.

From the brown construction paper-----cut a tree with all *scraggly* bare branches on it. Glue to left side of scene, make sure part of the trunk is under the fence. Now glue your fence to the bag (it takes about 20 craft sticks to go across the bag).

Cut a moon from the yellow felt & glue high in the sky. Glue black cat on top of fence. Glue 2-3 pumpkins right at the bottom of the fence. Glue the ghost *floating* in the tree.

Cut 2 pieces of ribbon 12" long & glue (or staple) on for handles.

You now have a trick or treat bag!

GARDENING

Fall is the best time to seed your lawn

(NC)—It's a must on every fall to-do list: overseed your lawn. When the temperatures fall to between 15° and 26°, it's time to apply grass seed to thicken your lawn and crowd out weeds. A few minutes spent this fall will yield a thicker, healthier lawn in the spring.

Use a blend of grasses, especially perennial ryegrasses and fescues, which need less care and can resist bugs. Scotts Pure Premium Grass Seed Mixture Sun and Shade fills the bill: it contains quality perennial varieties of Perennial Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass and Creeping Red Fescue. The lawn experts at Scotts Canada say Sun and Shade is the best all purpose mix for growing grass in sunny and shady areas. Specially formulated for quick coverage and a long lasting lawn, it resists drought, insects and fungus.

Begin by pulling weeds from your lawn when the soil is moist. You're sure to get more of the weed roots and disturb less of the soil. Drop some grass seed in the hole to discourage the weed from returning.

Next, to overseed, mow grass closely, then loosen the top 6 mm (1/4 inch) of soil in bare or thin areas. Distribute the seed evenly. For best results, use hand-held or rotary spreader.

Apply a starter fertilizer to increase seeding success and then water thoroughly.

Remember, watering is crucial to seed germination. Keep the top 1 cm (1/2 inch) of soil damp by watering twice daily until all seedlings are up. Continue to water once or twice a day until the lawn is established, usually six to eight weeks.

Your new young grass will survive the winter and become a thick lawn with few weeds next spring.
