HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas

Scarecrow

A scarecrow costume is easy to make! Just dress your child in some old denim jeans, preferably dark blue ones with a variety of patches. Add a flannel shirt and stick some straw up into the arm and leg cuffs with a little sticking out for effect. You may want to use a long sleeved undershirt under the flannel and attach the straw to the undershirt with fabric clue. For makeup, go for rosy cheeks and faux freckles.

Ghost

A ghost costume is probably one of the most classic and easiest Halloween costumes out there. For a traditional ghost, use a sheet with holes cut out for the eyes, nose and mouth. For a girl ghost, you can even put makeup on the face of the sheet! Or, you can try a different look and dress up in all white clothing, with white face makeup and temporary white spray dye for hair.

Hobo

A hobo is another easy Halloween costume you can make with clothing you have on hand, or clothing you find at a secondhand store. Try jeans or pants with patches and holes, a flannel shirt with holes or rips, and of course, dirty looking makeup! Try charcoal or black eyeshadow to create a scruffy beard, or use smears of brown eyeshadow to create the illusion of dirt. To top it all off, try an old, tattered hat! You can even hang a cardboard sign around you or your child's neck (whoever is the hobo) that says something like, “Will beg for food.”

HALLOWEEN RECIPES

Bambrack - Irish Halloween Cake

Ingredients:

2 2 1 lb flour
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
Pinch of salt
2 oz butter
3/4 oz dried yeast
2 tablespoons sugar
2 well beaten eggs
1/2 oz sultanas
1/2 lbs currants
4 oz chopped candied peel
1/2 pint of milk

Directions:

Sift flour, nutmeg and salt together. Cut butter into flour. Cream the yeast in a cup with a teaspoon of sugar. Add the rest of the sugar to the flour mixture and mix well. Warm the milk slightly and add to the yeast and eggs. Add liquid to the dry ingredients and beat well until batter is stiff. Fold in currants, raisins and peel. Fill greased 8 inch cake pan halfway. Cover with a cloth and leave to rise in a warm place until mixture has doubled in size (about 1 hour). Brush top of the dough with a little beaten egg to give a glaze and bake at 400 degrees F for 1 hour.

HALLOWEEN DECORATING

Halloween Decoration Ideas for Curtains, Windows, and Doors

Add some Halloween spirit to your home with some simple additions to your curtains or windows, or by adding curtains to doorways.

• Turn a window tie back into a fun way to display some Halloween decorations. Attach small skulls, bats, witches hats, plastic pumpkins, spiders or any other decoration you can think of to each end of the tie back. When you tie the curtains make sure your decorations are in the front.

• Have a room where the curtains aren't exactly Halloween colors. Change it up quickly by draping black silky fabric over your other curtains.

• Create a witches doorway by using decorative brooms. Attach one on each side then two facing opposite directions above the doorway.

• Instead of buying fabric, get a couple of spools of wide ribbon in orange and black. Tie one end of a ribbon to the curtain rod, cut it so that is goes all the way down to the windowsill and continue doing this alternating colors. You will get a fun look for cheap. You could also substitute the ribbon for crepe paper, but it is harder to tie. This can also be done over doorways for a fun look.
