WEDDINGS

Planning a Winter Wedding

While spring remains the most popular season in which to tie the knot, winter can be a beautiful time as well. The clean, crisp air, sparkling snow and holiday mood all combine to make winter a wonderful season in which to wed. Here are some ideas to help you plan a spectacular winter wedding:

Theme

Choosing a theme makes planning your wedding easier. With a theme, it's simple to choose colors and coordinate everything from your attire to the decorations. Examples of winter wedding themes include Christmas, Snowflake, and Winter Wonderland. For a Christmas themed wedding, your color scheme would of course include red and green. A snowflake theme would of course feature lots of crystal snowflakes. For a Winter Wonderland theme, you could go for either frosty shades of white and silver or deep jewel tones like sapphire, ruby or emerald.

Location

There are many great places where you can hold your winter wedding. A church is always a traditional choice. However, a country inn, banquet hall, or even the home of a friend or family member can work nicely also. For a romantic and magical experience, arrive at your destination (or exit) in a horse drawn carriage.

Invitations

When choosing invitations, match them to your color scheme. You could choose snowy white invitations adorned with embossed holly. Or, go for navy blue invitations featuring engraved white snowflakes. Make sure to include not only the wedding announcement but the location, time and dress code. Always request an RSVP, as it's much easier to plan when you know how many guests to expect.

THANKSGIVING RECIPES

Pumpkin Cake Roll

Ingredients:

CAKE:

3 eggs
1 c. sugar
2/3 c. cooked pumpkin
1 tsp. lemon juice
3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt

FILLING:

1 c. confectioners' sugar
2 pkgs. (3 oz. each) cream cheese
4 tbsp. butter
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:

To make cake, beat eggs in mixing bowl at high speed for 5 minutes; beat in sugar until blended. Stir in pumpkin and lemon juice. Combine flour, baking powder, spices and salt; fold into pumpkin mixture. Spread in greased and floured 15 x 10 x 1 inch jelly roll pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. Remove cake from oven; turn out on clean linen towel liberally dusted with confectioners' sugar. Starting at narrow end, roll towel and cake together; cool. Make filling by combining ingredients and mixing until smooth. Unroll cooled cake; spread with filling to within 1 inch of edges. Roll back up; chill. Dust with additional confectioners' sugar before serving.

THANKSGIVING PLANNING

Thanksgiving Games for Families

Paring Apples

This is a simple game that can make the task of peeling apples a lot more fun! You'll need apples, as well as paring knives for adults and safety peelers for children. The object of the game is simple -- the person who peels the longest unbroken length of apple skin is the winner!

Broom Dancing

This simple game needs only a broom to be played! Each person will perform their own individual broom dance. The next person must replicate their dance exactly. This is fun because you can easily come up with some crazy movements for the next player to copy. Plus, it's more challenging than it looks to copy someone's exact movements. A camcorder is a must for this fun Thanksgiving family game!

HOMEMADE GIFT IDEAS

Making Herbal Wreaths for Gift-Giving

Making the Wreath
To make a herbal wreath, you will need four or five freshly cut pieces of your chosen herb that are at least a foot long. Two foot lengths make a nicer sized wreath, however. Make a circle using one piece. Just wind the thinner, more flexible end around the stiffer, thicker end a few times to hold it in place. Then, take an additional piece and weave it around the circle with the fat end starting on the thinner side of the circle. Continue by weaving the other pieces around the circle until it is securely fastened and looks nice and full.

Make a loop in one end of a piece of picture wire. Fasten the other end to the top of your wreath on the wrong side. This will be your wreath hanger. It is important to do this now, since your wreath is more fragile once it is dry. If you want to make a bow, now is the time to add that, as well. I prefer my wreaths without bows, but some people like a bit more color.

Drying the Wreath
Now, it is time to hang the completed wreath to dry. Choose a spot that is out of direct sunlight and make sure there is no dampness. The wreaths will take a week or so to thoroughly dry, and the room where you dry them will smell terrific.

Packaging the Finished Wreath
When you give your wreaths as gifts, place them in a box with the wrong side down. Transporting them loose or in bags results in a lot of lost or broken leaves.

I usually hand write a tag for my wreaths telling what they are useful for. For example, people can actually make tea with Lemon Verbena leaves and Eucalyptus repels moths and mice. Of course, people can also just hang their gifts on the wall and enjoy their scent.
