Editor's Note

Everyone around me is busy decking up their halls (and walls...and everything else!) for the holidays. This weekend saw a lot of people rushing to the tree farms to get a nice little tree before all the good ones are gone. Weekends are also a great time to go around picking up evergreen boughs and pinecones to use for decorations later. Not to mention making your own wreaths! I hope our ideas in today's issue and on our website http://www.dotcomwomen.com will inspire you with unique and creative ideas for the season.

P.S. For those who haven't download the 'Celebrating Christmas PDF Magazine' 2006 issue yet, here's the link where you can download it from - completely FREE! It's an amazing magazine with a whole lot of creative ideas and you simply must not miss it.

CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS

Christmas Food Gift Ideas

by http://www.Celebrating-Christmas.com

Here are a few food gift ideas you could give for Christmas

1. Combine a variety of different cookies in a jar and make a booklet of recipes to include with your gift. Make it more interesting by gift-wrapping it. You could look for gift bottles and jars at garage sales, thrift stores, antiques stores and drug stores. Also you can save old wine bottles and glass water bottles of varying colors and shapes for filling with cookies and chocolate. Decorate the outside of bottles and jars with labels, cards, stickers, stamps or wrapping paper.

2. Dry cookies with crunchy or hard textures, such as shortbreads, are ideal for mailing.
Individually wrap dense bar cookies (like Blondie’s and fudge brownies) with plastic wrap to keep them moist and fresh. Pack crisp and soft cookies separately; moisture will make the crisp cookies lose their crunch. You could pack the cookies snugly in a sturdy tin or plastic container. Over- or under-stuffing could damage them.

3. Ship your food gifts in a heavy-duty cardboard box packed with shipping peanuts, bubble wrap or crumbled newspaper.

4. You could gift home made cookies. Always use unsalted butter in recipes that call for butter. Margarine’s high water content can affect cooking time. Carefully wrap baked cookies, which can be frozen to preserve their freshness.

5. A cookie pot surprise would also be a perfect choice. This pot could contain different varieties of cookies, chocolate, wine bottle. You could arrange all this in a cute colorful container personalized with the name of your choice.

HANUKKAH PARTY PLANNING

Tips on Throwing a Hanukkah Party

by http://www.Celebrating-Hanukkah.com

If you're going to be hosting a Hanukkah party this year, here are some tips to make things run smoothly!

Decor is crucial for any great Hanukkah celebration. Deck your home out in the traditional colors of blue, silver and white. In addition to the traditional menorah, get a Hanukkah bush from a tree lot, nursery, or even the forest. Decorate your bush with lights in the traditional colors, and top with a large silver Star of David. Adorn your mantle and tabletops with Hanukkah themed items like the dreidel or chocolate gelt.

Print copies of traditional Hanukkah blessings to give to all your guests as they enter. It is customary to say a blessing before lighting a candle on the menorah. Even if you know the blessings by heart, some of your guests may not, and by printing them out, everyone can recite them without difficulty.

When it comes to the menu for your Hanukkah party, foods fried in oil are the traditional choice. Potato latkes are always a perfect entree. Try pairing them with sour cream and applesauce. Appetizers are always a good idea for any party. Why not make homemade fried won tons? You can purchase won ton wrappers at the supermarket and stuff them with your favorite fillings like cream cheese and crab.

Gift giving is a traditional event at any Hanukkah party. Try inexpensive yet heartfelt gifts. One good option is to ask everyone at the party to make their own gifts. If making gifts isn't your thing, you can never go wrong with items like books, CDs, chocolates, and gift certificates.

When it comes to games and activities, the dreidel game is a must! For those who don't know, a dreidel is a four sided top that is used in a betting game. Try betting with coins, or you can use food items like nuts or candies. On each side of the dreidel are Hebrew letters that stand for a different action. Nun means do nothing, he means you get half the kitty, gimel means you get the whole kitty, and shin means you lose.

Start planning your Hanukkah party early. Send out invitations at least a month in advance, to make sure all guests have a chance to RSVP. With some planning, you can host the perfect Hanukkah party that everyone will remember for years to come!
