Editor's Note

What do you know - even my 18 month old daughter loves to do art and craft projects! She is not of an age to appreciate the end result but she does enjoy the process thoroughly. I get her involved in little projects such as pasting bits of colorful paper (mostly scraps from my other projects) on to double sided tape or even let her splash some paint on to paper (under my supervision), making a whole lot of mess all the time. But it's great fun and works wonders to shoo away the boredom of her routine activities and toys, speaking of which, she hardly seems interested in them now.

Today's ezine carries some tips on keeping your kids busy indoors and this feature will continue for a few more weeks with every issue bringing you tips for kids of a different age group.

LET'S TALK BUSINESS

Mystery Shopping Jobs

It’s A Mystery All Right!

How can the quality of retail service be measured? Is it a mystery? Not really, because many research companies have developed and used a tool called the mystery shopper. Mystery shopping jobs help businesses improve.

Mystery shopping jobs involve people who act as shoppers in return for some combination of store credit, financial reimbursement, purchase discounts, or other perks. Mystery shoppers have various tasks assigned to them when they are hired. Each store or business may have different instructions depending on what they hoping to achieve.

Businesses advertise for mystery shopping jobs so that they can figure out what customers want and need. They can use mystery shoppers to asses how they are doing and what actions they need to take to improve their services.

Those who have a mystery shopping job may be given certain scripted behaviors or questions they need to ask. They may be instructed to register complaints and the time it takes to receive attention from an employee. A mystery shopping job may involve someone who is asked to record the responses they are given by employees when asked specific questions.

A mystery shopping job is not a new idea. It began in the 1940’s as a way to measure the integrity of employees. There are various tools that are used for mystery shopping assessments. The most simple of these tools are questionnaires and then there are far more complicated tools that are used such as video and audio recordings.

The Internet is now being used as a way to administer mystery shopping companies. People who want to become mystery shoppers can use the Internet to register as potential participants. They can also find mystery shopping jobs and receive reimbursement.

Mystery shopping jobs provide businesses with a way to monitor and evaluate.

RECIPES

Potato and Apple Mash

To every 450g of potatoes use one cooking apple.

Peel the potatoes and cut into large chunks. Peel quarter and core the apples.
Put together in a saucepan with about 25mm water.
Cover and bring to the boil on the boiling plate and boil for 1 minute.
Drain and replace the lid.
Transfer to the simmering oven for about an hour or until the potatoes are soft enough to mash.
Drain off any excess moisture and mash the apples and potatoes with butter until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
Grate a red-skinned apple leaving the skin on and fold into the mash to give an attractive appearance.

PARENTING

Keeping your Toddlers Busy and Happy, Even Indoors!

The winter season can get very long. How do you entertain your kids for five months of the year when it’s often too cold to take them outside for some fresh air? Keeping them busy can become a tough undertaking when you’re faced with this predicament, and allowing them to watch hours upon hours of television is not an option. So what’s a parent to do? Keep them busy with creative games and activities for every age group!

Toddlers are at the stage in their lives when the have abundant energy and a desire to learn about everything that goes on around them. Keeping them busy can include nursery rhymes and finger plays, educational fun, music, movement, and arts and crafts. Some ideas for entertaining your tot are:

1. Making spaghetti mobiles – dip spaghetti noodles into glue (or corn syrup thinned with water if your child is likely to eat the noodles), and lay the noodles on a styrofoam meat tray. Let the noodles dry, then remove them from the meat tray, tie on a piece of yarn, and hang them from the ceiling as a mobile. Extra tip: The glue can be colored with food coloring to make this activity even more fun!

2. Make a coffee can drum – create a drum for your child by cutting the bottom out of a coffee can and covering both ends with plastic lids. Create a drumstick by gluing the lead end of a pencil into the hole of an empty thread spool. Extra tip: Glue contact paper around the can after your child has decorated the paper. Or, use an empty oatmeal box and an empty paper towel roll for a softer sound.

HEALTH

Choosing a Dietary Supplement -- What You Should Know

With a growing number of dietary supplement products on the market, selecting the right one for your needs can be an intimidating and confusing task. Knowing what to look for before you purchase a dietary supplement makes the decision-making process easier. Here’s a simple “Before You Choose Checklist:”

* Talk to your physician or pharmacist
They can be helpful in advising you on dosage values for your needs, possible allergic reactions, interactions with other medications or foods and potential side effects.

* Research the supplement
Search the Web or visit your local library for information on the supplement as well as supplement brands. Online databases such as ConsumerReportsMedicalGuide.org and Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database conveniently provide current and objective data. Always make sure your sources are reputable and up-to-date.

* Make sure they have been tested
Several organizations test supplements. The most rigorous of testing services is offered by The United States Pharmacopeia (USP), recognized by the FDA as the standard-setting organization for medicines and supplements. USP tests supplements through its USP verified service and awards a special identifying mark -- the USP Verified Mark -- to products that meet its stringent requirements. Dietary supplement manufacturers voluntarily participate in this program to verify the quality of their products.

When you see the USP Verified Mark on a supplement label, you’ll instantly know that the product:

* Contains ingredients in the amounts stated on the label. Some supplements may contain significantly less or more than the claimed amounts of key ingredients. Since dietary supplements are regulated as food, not drugs, they do not have to be approved for effectiveness by the FDA. The Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) does require that ingredients are stated on the label, but it does not require that they be validated.

* Has been tested for harmful levels of contaminants. Random off-the-shelf tests have shown that some supplements may contain lead, mercury, other heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria, and molds. USP does random off the shelf testing to ensure that the products that have been provided the USP Verified Mark still meet the necessary program requirements.

* Will release and dissolve so that the body may absorb the ingredients. If a supplement does not break down properly to allow ingredients to dissolve in the body, you may not receive the full benefit of its contents.

* Was made according to good manufacturing practices. Assurance of safe, sanitary, well-controlled, and well-documented manufacturing and monitoring processes is a good indication that the manufacturer is concerned about the quality of their products.
