HOME DECORATING
Glam Up the Bathroom
Luxury and glamour in
the loo? From glitzy finishes to haute couture fabrics, this new
d?cor trend is changing the way we live with and use our bathrooms.
"Like an over-sized
diamond paired with a classic black dress, today's glamour movement
is all about subtle indulgences," says Karen Sealy, Toronto-based
interior designer. "Anything that glitters, feels good to the touch
or looks expensive can really revive luxury in the bathroom. Think
crystal doorknobs, high gloss chrome and steel and fashion-inspired
fixtures and accessories."
Sealy offers these
tips to create a glamorous bathroom:
Add
reflective surfaces
While mirrors have
traditionally been the way to bring sparkle into the bathroom, new
ways to brighten the space have emerged. Cut crystal, mercury glass
vases, solid crystal doorknobs and luminescent wallpaper are unique
ways to add a luxurious, reflective touch to any bathroom.
Use rich,
dark colours
Tones that used to be
reserved for living rooms and kitchens are making their way into the
bathroom. While softer hues in spa-like bathrooms are still trendy,
find Zen in the rich, dark woods of cabinetry or chocolate brown
tiles.
Install
beautiful fixtures
Adding luxurious
fixtures with classic lines and unique accents like the new RSVP
Bath Collection by Brizo that features STRASS Swarovski crystal
accents, adds a distinctive sparkle to the bathroom.
Showcase
statement furniture pieces
Create a glamorous
bathroom by incorporating items that look like 'collectors' pieces.
These can be authentic antiques, good reproductions or even
furniture with modern lines. Look for pieces with striking details
like inlaid wood, ormolu accents or carved fret work.
Introduce
artistic influences
Displaying art or
sculpture in the bathroom gives the room a focal point, creates a
mood and continues the d?cor themes of the home into the space. Make
sure to consider humidity when framing art and choosing materials
for this room.
Be fashion
forward
Finding hits of
seasonal fashion in the bathroom is an unexpected injection of
luxury for this space. Designers are incorporating op art and
60s-inspired fashions and fabrics to create a vibrant look. To add a
subtle hit of psychedelic style to your own bathroom, add vases,
shower curtains or towels detailed with op art patterns.

PARENTING
Keeping your Preschoolers Busy and
Happy, Even Indoors!
Although preschoolers often enter school
or a playgroup for two or three days a week, they still rely on
parents for new experiences and creative activities. Some ideas for
indoor activities include arts and crafts, music, movement, drama,
and reading or writing. Some options for intriguing your preschooler
are:
Noodle necklace Make a noodle necklace
by threading macaroni noodles on a string. Know the ends together
and paint the noodles with tempera paints. Let the paint dry, and
wear!
Create a play city Using markers on a
large sheet of paper, draw an imaginary city big enough for your
childs cars and trucks. Include landmarks such as a bank, grocery
store, gas station, park, hospital, school, post office, and so on.
Extra tip: For a more permanent city,
use paints on strong cardboard. Glue milk cartons or small boxes
onto the map to make buildings!
