HOME & GARDEN

Enhance outdoor living with trellises

Trellises have been adding character and elegance to outdoor living spaces for years. Yet, these stylish wooden structures are practical projects that bring everyday elegance to your yard or garden – and can be built in a single weekend.

Are you considering dressing up your front or backyard natural setting? Here are a few considerations to remember:

Site Selection. Consider attaching the trellis to your home, using it to shelter a path between the main house and an outbuilding. One of the greatest appeals of a trellis is its architecture, so make sure the site, size and proportion you choose is appropriate for its surroundings.

Materials. One of the most popular building materials for trellises is western red cedar. Many homeowners specify cedar due to its all-natural look, pleasant aroma and character that blend nicely with the natural surroundings. And it's natural resistance to decay and insects has long been recognized.

Decorative Touches. Consider adding decorative touches to all canopy board ends. To create a decorative end, perfect your design on construction paper then use it as a template to transfer your design to each board end. Cut, and then sand the edges to create a smooth finish.

As you'll see, trellises can give any backyard some classical character as well as seasonal charm. A trellis can make a dramatic change to your outdoor living areas, and better yet, you can build it in just one weekend. RECIPES

Slow Cooker Picante Lentils

Serve this condiment with eggs or over burritos, pasta or rice.

28 oz. canned crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup lentils; rinsed
1 cup chopped onion
5 cloves minced garlic
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. toasted cumin seed
1 green chile pepper; minced
1/2 cup hot picante sauce

Combine tomatoes, lentils, onions, garlic, sugar, cumin,
chili, and sauce in slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours until lentils are tender.

Serves 4.

PARENTING

Keeping your Kids Busy and Happy, Even Indoors!

While older children are capable of entertaining themselves much of the time, being indoors constantly can wear out their ideas. Keep them occupied with some arts and crafts, baking or cooking. Some indoor activities include:

Make a marshmallow sculpture – join toothpicks and miniature marshmallows together. Challenge your child to see who can make the most elaborate house, car or the funniest animal.

Play 3D tick-tack-toe – mark a large tick-tack-toe grid on the floor with tape or string. Give each player five beanbags of a different color from the other player’s beanbags. Toss the beanbags into the grid until one player has three beanbags in a row.

HOMEMAKING

Tired of the clutter? Give your mudroom a makeover

(NC)—With the hustle and bustle of daily life, a mudroom can quickly accumulate unnecessary clutter. Luckily, it's easy to keep your frustrations from piling up. With a few easy tips you can make the most out of your mudroom.

Keep it Clean

After a long day, it's easy to drop belongings at the door, which can quickly add up to a big mess. Add a multi-tiered coat rack and umbrella holder to keep coats and bags off the floor while providing a place for umbrellas to dry.

Contain the clutter by adding storage cabinets. Manufacturers such as Sauder offer a variety of decorative cabinets and shelves in many different finishes to meet your storage and d?cor needs. Plus, by keeping storage vertical, you can add extra space. Label or color-code the shelves for each family member to keep organized and reduce the risk of misplaced items.

Get Functional

Rethink your utility sink and remember – you can be functional and fashionable. Replace the utility tub with a more decorative sink. Then, add a pullout faucet, such as Moen's Integra faucet in a Chrome or Stainless finish, for added style appeal and functionality. Pullout faucets can help tackle the messiest of jobs, like washing the dog, rinsing mud from boots or cleaning up after an art project – all with the bonus of eye-catching design.

Hang a dry erase or chalk message board and key ring next to the door. The message board will keep everyone on the same page when it comes to remembering important things, like returning movies or club meetings; while the hooks will keep your keys easily accessible.

A Personal Touch

Adding personal touches can make a mudroom feel cozier. Hang a decorative mirror to make the room seem larger and allow you to do a final inspection on hair and make-up before heading out. Place an indoor/outdoor decorative rug near the door to add some color and texture to the room, while also trapping dirt and dampness. Finally, add some decorative baskets which are both flattering and functional in a mudroom. These accessories create a warm decorative feel and work wonders to store a variety of items.

With just a few changes, you can eliminate the mess from your mudroom and transform it into a useful and well-organized room.
