GARDENING

How To Build A Flower Garden

By Dave Owen

Flower gardening is a very popular hobby, and is getting larger with each new season. There are many ways to get information about this topic, especially for the beginning. Even if you have some experience with gardening, you can find more information on any aspect that you may wish to explore.

One of the main things to keep in mind when starting out is to start small. With a small bed, you may not get overwhelmed. And, once you become more comfortable with gardening, you can expand. You can also start with a variety of plants to see what kind you want to grow. If you start small, this will give you more of a chance to understand gardening as a relaxation and hobby rather than a major chore that must be done.

There are basically two types of gardening methods. The most common being with chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. The other is the use of organic gardening. Organic gardening works to create a natural balance in your flower garden between the plants and the soil. It follows the thought that your garden as a living ecosystem. Following this, it tries to maintain health without the use of harsh and harmful chemicals.

Getting Started With Your Flower Garden

Choosing a proper site for your garden is one of the most important considerations to at this point. The amount of sun your plants will receive is one of the most significant factors to consider. This is because sunlight is one of the key ingredients to growing a healthily garden. An average of six hours of sunlight per day will be great for most plants.

If the area you have to work with gets more sunlight, you should plant flowers that can handle full sun exposure. Another important factor to consider in gardening is the different types of plants. In the case flowers, learn the amount of water, sunlight and soil factors that they need in order to strive.

When you have identified the area, you need to mark out the boundaries with something such as a water hose. Then remove all sod, grass, and weeds from your bed. The flower bed should be turned to a depth of eight to ten inches. And all rocks and debris should be cleared away as well.

After this is completed, you can follow the planting instructions for your plants. With proper 'care and feeding', your plantings will grow into a beautiful flower garden. Bulb flowers can fill your garden with brilliant and beautiful color throughout most of the year. With just a little effort, you can have colorful blooms such as daffodils, iris, tulips, gladiolus, hyacinth, and daylilies.

With a large selection of flowers to choose from, your flower gardening experience can be a fun and enjoyable hobby.

RECIPES

Asparagus Soup

675g asparagus
salt and pepper
2 small onions peeled and chopped
25g butter
1-1/2 litres chicken stock
150ml single cream

Cut the tips off the asparagus and simmer them gently in boiling salted water until tender.
Drain and refresh in cold water.
Drain and reserve.
Trim the stalks of the asparagus and cut into 2 inch lengths.
Melt the butter in a large saucepan on the simmering plate add the asparagus stalks and the chopped onion.
Stir cover and cook for 5 to 10 minutes until soft but not browning.
Add the stock and seasoning.
Bring to the boil cover and transfer to the simmering oven for about 45 minutes or until the asparagus is cooked.
Pass the soup through a blender or processor and then through a sieve to remove any woody stalk.
Stir in the cream.
Chill or warm through gently.
Serve garnished with the reserved asparagus tips.

The thicker stemmed asparagus can be used for this soup as it has more flavor. Serve chilled on a warm summer evening or gently warmed if the weather is cooler.

MAKEUP

Tips for Make-Up Brushes And Pencils

Make-Up brushes and pencils need special care as they come in direct contact with that most sensitive part of your body – your skin. Use these 5 free beauty tips to keep a high standard.

1. Clean makeup brushes with a mild liquid soap. Cup your hand, put in a little soapy water and swish the brushes in the palm of your hand until they are clean. Rinse, reshape, and hang over the edge of a table so the air can dry them naturally. To avoid damaging them, do not soak them in a sink or wrap them in a towel to dry.

2. When purchasing an eyebrow brush, be sure it has firm bristles. A soft brush will only slide over the surface. A firm brush will groom and control the short eyebrow hairs.

3. Use a concealer brush to apply concealer to the innermost corner of the eye. This small, firm brush with a tip can reach this difficult spot which often appears dark as it is so recessed. In the absence of a concealer brush, use a finger to apply the concealer.

4. If you wish to invest in quality makeup brushes, purchase natural bristle rather than synthetic bristles. Sable is a strong favorite. Make sure the bristles are packed tight and not loose. Brush the back of the hand to make sure it doesn't lose too many bristles.

5. When using an eyebrow pencil, use short, diagonal strokes in the direction of the hair growth. Give more attention to areas where there are less hairs rather than an even coverage. Note: Avoid the temptation to use an eyeliner pencil on the eyebrows. They are soft and malleable, ideal for the delicate eye area. An eyebrow pencil needs to be fairly hard to allow you to create tiny strokes in specific areas.

HOMEMAKING

Effective Cleaning Tips to Help Lighten the Load

Continued from Last Week

* Remove unsightly scuff marks in seconds. Your floors can take a beating, especially in the kitchen. Whether it’s your children’s sneakers or your own dress shoes, scuff marks are inevitable. The next time you notice scuff marks on the vinyl kitchen floor, use a rubber eraser and rub over the mark until it disappears.

* Sanitize your dishes. The dishwasher is one of the greatest shortcuts to cleaning up after a big family dinner. To keep your machine clean, put a cup of bleach into the empty dishwasher and run it through a cycle. This will disinfect and keep it from leaving food residue on your dishes.

* Keep up on pet hair. Sometimes families extend beyond our spouses and children and often times include a family pet. Next time you go to sit down on the couch and you notice that it is covered in your pet’s hair, grab a lint roller or rubber glove. Roll or rub your hand over the furniture and make a quick pick up.
