HOMEMAKING

Laundry tips for the busy family

Make laundry day easier and energy-smart with these simple tips

(NC)—Having a house full of kids means lots of laughter and playtime, but it also means lots of laundry. Dealing with these extra loads of laundry is often a balancing act; as washing too often can impact the lifespan of your clothing and lead to a higher energy bills.

Faced with her own extra loads of washing, Julia Grieve – Canadian fashion designer and mother of two – shares easy tips to help ensure your family's clothing last through the season, with the added bonus of saving energy:

1. Prepare your laundry: Pre-treat tough stains to ensure the cleanest result. Also, avoid pilling and fading by turning clothes inside out.

2. Check your labels: Always double check your labels; you would be surprised how many items actually require cold water washing. At Preloved we recommend cold water washing on all our garment labels. For more tips on cold water washing visit www.tidecoldwater.ca

3. Choose the correct water temperature: More than half of Canadians still wash at least some of their clothes in warm water. However by washing in cold water, with a detergent such as Tide Coldwater, you can get excellent cleaning results on both colours and whites. You can also save up to 75 per cent of your household energy used per load – a definite advantage for families with kids.

4. Use the appropriate wash cycle: Don't overfill your machine with clothes, despite the temptation to get your laundry done quickly – a general rule of thumb is to fill your machine to 80 per cent of its capacity for best cleaning results.

5. Don't rely solely on your dryer to dry your clothes: Occasionally hanging clothes to dry can extend garment life and save energy.

Drain then return to pan.
Cover and shake to roughen up the surfaces.
Stir breadcrumbs paprika salt and 2 tbsp of the oil into the potatoes until well mixed the crumbs wont stick very well to the potatoes at this stage.
Heat the remaining oil in a small roasting tin lust large enough to hold the potatoes.
Add the potatoes sprinkling over stray crumbs.
Roast on the floor of the roasting oven for 30 minutes then place on the second or third runners for a further 30 to 50 minutes shaking the potatoes in the tin as you move them.
Keep warm uncovered.

LOVE & ROMANCE

Romantic Evening Ideas

Romance is something that can be a daily occurrence, but the evening seems to be the special time. Here are some romantic ideas for the evening if you are scheming love.

Are you in charge of planning a special evening of romance for you and your special someone? You need to look no further than your own living room for unique and romantic ideas for the evening. There are plenty of romantic things to do at evening. You can have a evening out on the town or enjoy the comfort of your own home.

If you decide to go out on the town, be sure to plan ahead! Most romantic restaurants will require reservations and a special dress code. Give your sweetie plenty of time to arrange, but still hold the element of surprise in your hand! After dinner, find a fun place to kick back and relax while staying low key and romantic.

Progressive dinners are always a hit. This is where you have a drink at one place, appetizers at another and your main course at another. All of the different romantic atmospheres in one evening will leave your partner flying high in anticipation for what will come next! Fondue and other specially themed restaurants are almost always enjoyed by both the men and the ladies. Unique dining experiences are sure to be passionate and appreciated. By the end of the evening you will be ready head on home. Cuddling on the couch by the warm, romantic fireplace is the perfect end to the evening.

The classic dinner and a movie can be just as romantic as a lavish evening on the town. Throw in a stop at the ice cream shop after the movie and you will have a complete date evening! For guys, giving in and watching the latest chick flick at the movie theatre can be a romantic gesture that most any girl will appreciate. If you and your sweetheart are movie buffs, make an entire evening out of watching movie after movie. Some theaters even offer mid-evening shows.

If you are looking for a low key evening at home, there is plenty for you to do, too! Cooking anything from a fancy dinner to macaroni and cheese can be romantic. Pair your meal with sparkling cider or classy champagne to add a special touch. The effort you put out is worth more than the money or time you would have spent out on the town! Spend time cuddled up by the fireplace talking of times past and your future together. Finish off the evening with a romantic movie at home and a warm and sparkling bubble bath. As you can see, you do not need to spend a lot of money in order to have a romantic evening together.
