Five Hot Home Computing Trends

Home computing technology evolves at a dizzying pace. For consumers who want to get the most value out of the latest technology, wading through the options can seem overwhelming.

“Technology has the ability to make everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable only if it’s really something a consumer can and will use,” said Craig Cincotta, senior product manager for Windows Vista at Microsoft Corp., which recently launched its new Windows Vista operating system for homes and businesses. “The most exciting features will ultimately fail to please a home PC user if they don’t meet a real-life need for the user.”

Here are five technology trends for real-life home computer users:

* Multitasking. Do you find yourself with three or more files or programs open on your PC at one time? Expanding and collapsing windows can be time-consuming. To alleviate multitasking challenges, a new type of visual environment, Windows Aero, makes program or file windows transparent to reveal otherwise hidden objects, or you can display multiple active windows in a 3-D stack of file folders.

* Digital photo galleries. Digital cameras have quickly become the photo-taking method of choice for many families, which leads to thousands of unsorted photos. Programs that help you organize your digital photo gallery are essential. Windows Vista Video Import Wizard prompts you to assign subject-, scene- or event-related descriptive names for photos when you import them to your PC.

* Search and organize. How much time do you spend every day searching for a file you know you have stored somewhere on your PC’s hard drive? Instant searches now allow you to look for a file with a word, phrase, title, author’s name or other term that you know is in the file, to launch a fast, on-the-fly search.

* Parental controls. Keeping kids safe on the Internet is a vital issue for every family that uses a PC. New parental control features allow parents to take charge of when the computer is used and what Web sites, programs or games each family member may access. Activity reports can also be automatically generated.

* Stronger security. Fending off worms, spyware, other malware and snooping hackers that may infect your systems via the Internet is a constant battle. The beefed-up firewall technology (designed to help block out the incoming bad stuff automatically) and the new Windows Defender will automatically scan your PC for infections.

Some product features are available only in certain Windows Vista editions and may require advanced or additional hardware and Internet service. (Provider subscription or other service fees may apply.) For details, and to learn more about Windows Vista and hot new home computing trends, visit http://www.windowsvista.com. You can also see all the new features, determine the right version of Windows Vista to fit your family’s needs, and download the Upgrade Advisor to identify elements you may need to upgrade on your PC. And, if you’re shopping for a new PC, go for one with Windows Vista already installed.

Tips to Keep Your Pet Happy & Healthy

83 per cent of cat and dog owners consider their pets to be a part of the family. To make the most of your relationship, try following these steps to strengthen your bond and increase your pet's vitality.

1. An active pet is a happy pet. Find activities you and your cat or dog can do together. Try giving your cat a catnip mouse or train a laser pointer on the ground for him to chase. If you have a dog, visit an off-leash park on weekends to let your dog stretch her legs…and yours! Daily play and exercise will not only help both of you sleep better at night; it will help strengthen your bond.

2. Pet proof your home. Make sure all electrical cords and breakable objects are safely placed and household cleaning products are stored away where pets won't find them. Decorative plants can be a tempting snack, but many are poisonous to cats and dogs so keep them well out of reach of inquisitive mouths.

3. Just as humans have annual physical exams, so should your pet. Schedule regular checkups with your veterinarian. Cats and dogs are not always able to communicate when they're ill. Small changes, such as weight loss or increased thirst may indicate underlying problems which your veterinarian can diagnose and treat before they become emergencies. Speak with your veterinarian about treating your pet with a broad spectrum preventative treatment, such as Revolution, which will protect against parasites like fleas and heartworm. An ounce of protection really is worth a pound of cure when it comes to your loved one's health.

How to create a safe and fun kids playroom

(NC)—Parents love to watch their kids laugh and learn while they play. They enjoy it even more when playtime is not taking place in their elegant dining room or stylish living rooms, where costly accidents are inevitable. This is why most parents dedicate a special playroom for their kids so they can enjoy a fun zone oasis from all the adult spaces.

It's important, however, for parents to consider the safety needs of their children when creating this fun play area. Here are some d?cor tips from Dominique P?pin, member of the Color Marketing Group and Senior Brand Manager at Sico Paints to help you create a room where your children and their friends will love to gather and play for hours.

First of all P?pin recommends you allow the whole family to pitch in with ideas for the playroom. "It's important to involve the kids in the planning," she says. "Let them choose the colours, even if you might need to alter them later. Keep them returning to the room by designing with secret spaces and bright colors that capture children's imaginations."

Colours

As for the playroom paint colours, P?pin recommends choosing from Sico's "Energy Palette" (www.sico.ca), a collection of bright, vibrant colours that promote a creative and lively atmosphere ideal for energetic play and arts and crafts.

For the paint itself she suggests Sico Shantung or Chamois, as they are made with a technology using self-coalescing and crosslinking polymers. Beautifully durable, they retain their fresh look even with repeated washing. This means it's ideal for high-traffic rooms like playrooms and children's bedrooms.

The most important characteristic of these paints, however, is that their formulas are now VOC (volatile organic compound) emission-free. VOCs are atmospheric pollutants that, among other things, contribute to the formation of smog. "In the home, VOCs evaporate while paint is applied and drying, making them one of the pollutants affecting a home's air quality as well," P?pin explained. "So, consumers using any of Sico's new design finishes will actually be improving the quality of air in their homes." Since the paint is still a chemical product, however, she cautions that it must be used and disposed of safely.

Functions

P?pin said you should design your children's playroom to accommodate interests and activities, while allowing for future growth. Make sure to design with plenty of light and generous flat surfaces for art projects or schoolwork.

Storage

Open shelving, window seats and wall units are ideal for books, videotapes, computer games and treasures on display. For a neater look, store smaller items in bins, boxes and baskets you can tuck behind closed doors. Be sure drawers have safety catches and anchor any bookcases and other tall pieces to the wall with toggle bolts and brackets.
