FASHION

Jewelry Trends for 2007

At the awards shows, the celebrities wore quite large tiered earrings with no neck adornment. The bracelets were large and intricate. If a ring was worn, it was large and frequently showed a colored stone. If the celebrity wore a necklace, it was usually paired with small solitare earrings.

During Fashion week, we didn't see the huge bohemian or gypsy jewelry of last year. The models wore only a couple of pieces of jewelry to acessorize their outfits. Clothing has gone more minimalist, feminine and even ladylike. The jewelry was worn to accent, not overpower, the clothing.

Models wore simple but chunky chains and layers of chains with a variety of shapes were seen. Some of the chains were sprinkled with beads, with others accented with small charms. Mixed metals, using gold and silver together provide a more casual look.

Cuff bracelets were seen on many of the models. Some of the cuffs are large but well fitted for easy wear and copper is being shown along with silver in some of these bracelets. Other cuffs were shown with a mass of brilliant beads.

Statement rings with lots of color are being seen everywhere from the runway to the red carpet and in magazines. Large colored stones are shown set in gold and silver, but even bead rings with a cluster of brilliantly colored glass and crystal beads are being worn in a more casual setting. Some of these rings are being worn on the index finger.

The big news in the jewelry catalogs is color. Swarovski has introduced out intensely colored crystals. Freshwater pearls in bright turquoise, fuchsia, lime and peach with unusual shapes are available for the jewelry designer along with a wide array of Millefiori beads for added color.

Brilliantly colored cords in leather, rubber and niobium are emerging to beused with the simple pendants being shown during Fashion Week. These simple pendants can be leaves, flowers or birds in gold or silver.

Save your big pieces from last year as they will eventually come back, but add a few large classic chains, cuffs and a big colored ring to update your jewelry wardrobe for 2007.

Louise Coulson along with her husband Don designs and creates jewelry from sterling silver and gold filled wire. Their jewelry shows the wire used almost as if it were a fiber. The fiber arts approach comes from Louise's long background as a weaver and the meticulous craftsmanship is due to Don's background in engineering. The pieces are one-of-a-kind or limited edition.

Quick and easy kitchen upgrades: five quality changes you can make now

(NC)—Even the most modest kitchen will benefit from these small but stylish changes. Pick just one or do them all if your budget allows, but any of these changes will upgrade the look and feel of most kitchens without breaking the bank. The key to success is quality. These are not all inexpensive changes, but making just one or two quality additions to a kitchen is often all it takes to upgrade the overall look.

1. Upgrade a laminate countertop with a wood trim. If solid surface or granite just isn't in your budget, then consider a wood trim to encase the edges.

2. Upgrade any kitchen and any counter material with a premium sink and faucet. Spending more for a premium product will give any kitchen a lift. Sinks and faucets are highly visible in the kitchen, often centred under a window or in an otherwise well-lit spot. A premium sink brand from a high-end manufacturer such as Blanco will add drama and panache to any kitchen.

3. Replace kitchen knobs and spare no expense. If this is your one change, then search out something unusual–not your standard hardware store brand–and take some time to find the right style. Some antique shops have interesting selections. Research home decor magazines to see what you like and get new ideas, then enjoy the hunt.

4. Consider a granite sink as an alternative to stainless steel. Aside from being highly durable, granite adds colour and natural warmth. Silgranit, Canada's leading coloured sink brand, is a composite sink made of 80 per cent natural granite. Highly durable as well as heat- and scratch-resistant, it comes in seven colours that can be matched to your counter, backsplash or appliance. Silgranit adds a luxurious look and feel to any solid-surface counter, and it's ideal in drop-in sink styles in less-expensive laminate counters. Its solidity and warmth adds richness to the most modest of kitchens. Visit www.blancocanada.com for more information.

5. Last but not least, remove clutter and pare down to the essentials. The minimalist look is not only trendy, it's practical. Not only will you feel better in an organized and orderly kitchen, but your kitchen will look airy, fresher and brighter.

BEAUTY

Simple Summer Skin Care

(NC)—The lazy, hazy days of summer are right around the corner – and summer skin care doesn't have to be a chore. Just simplify your routine with fuss-free products that are ideal for this sizzling season.

Re-freshen up.

If the thought of layering moisturizer, sunscreen and foundation on your face makes you break a sweat, consider swapping them for tinted moisturizer. "Tinted moisturizer can be a wonderful alternative to foundation for summer weather," says Lynda Rose, vice president of sales and marketing for Mary Kay Cosmetics Ltd. "It's lightweight and provides natural-looking coverage." Mary Kay Tinted Moisturizer with Sunscreen SPF 20 is oil-free and comes in six shades.

To revive skin when you're on the go, stash a pack of just-add-water cleansing cloths in your summer tote. Cleansing cloths are also a perfectly portable option for your vacation. They're ideal to wipe away the dirt, sweat and oil that collect on skin during high-humidity weather. Rose suggests Mary Kay Facial Cleansing Cloths for "the soothing, botanical-enriched formula that leaves skin feeling clean and fresh".

Look sun-sational.

Whether you're taking a dip in the pool or celebrating on a patio, stay smudge-free with waterproof eye makeup, including eye colour, eye liner and mascara.

And when the heat is on, Rose recommends blotting papers – such as Mary Kay's Beauty Blotters Oil-Absorbing Tissues – to keep makeup from melting. "They soak up oil and shine to keep your makeup looking great."

Post-Fun in the Sun.

Applying sun protection should be a part of everyone's summer skin care routine. But if the sun has left your skin more baked than beautiful, post-sun products may help soothe skin and restore its radiance. "Our new After-Sun Replenishing Gel absorbs quickly and provides relief from dryness caused by exposure to the sun," says Rose.
