Editor's Note

To pack light for a travel is a continuous challenge for me. After my honeymoon, where both me and my husband almost entirely lived in our jeans and never once touched more than one heavy warm jacket, I had resolved to pack extremely light for all future vacations. But later, with a small baby to take care of, my priorities changed and I didn't want to miss a single thing that would make life easier for me on my vacation when taking care of a baby. And although I personally did pack light, it was my baby who had two big bags filled with her stuff.

Ah, well. Now that my 'baby' is not a baby any more, I pack much more lightly and have some space in my bags to bring back the knick-knacks that I love to shop for, when traveling. A very good article in today's ezine will give you some great tips on packing lightly for your summer travel and help you make the most out of your trip.

SUMMER TRAVEL

Tips for Packing Light

Summer is in full swing and you are ready for your vacation trip. Whether it is a weekend trip or a full two-week travel, one thing all vacationers agree with is the need to pack light. You don't want to spend time lugging your suitcase and you certainly don't want to miss any necessity while away from the comfort of your home.

With some easy tips, you will be able to pack a much lighter suitcase and have fun on your vacation without bothering about carrying a heavy bag.

1. First things first, know the difference between what you want to take with you, and what you really are going to use when on vacation. Keep aside only the stuff that you are really going to need and then think about how to pack it in the best possible way.

2. Are you going to be traveling? Or are you just staying? They are different. If you plan to be on road and camping and hiking and stuff like that, you are traveling, in which case you need to take along all necessities. If, on the other hand, you are going to be staying in a good hotel or with relatives and only going to do sight-seeing and shopping, you need to pack relatively less. Call up the hotel to find if they provide toiletries, bath robes, towels etc. so you don't need to carry them.

3. It might seem a waste of time transferring toiletries and cosmetics into small containers and much easier to dump in a few large bottles and tubes, but it will help saving a lot of space. So pack these things in little plastic, leak-proof containers.

4. Shoes take up a lot of space, but they have to go. Try to limit the number of shoes to one or two by choosing a pair that will go with most outfits. And make your shoes do a double duty. Stuff your shoes with underwear and socks to save space.

5. When packing apparel, choose clothes that you can mix and match to make a variety of dresses. Choose solid colored lowers that will go with many shirts and tops. Keep a set of 'luxe' clothes that you can wear when going to high end hotels and resorts for an evening party or dinner. This can be skipped if you are sure you are not going to have any such evening to wear it. Other clothes can be more sturdy that will last you all day when sight-seeing.

6. Take one sweater in a color that will go with most of your clothes. However, if going to colder climates, don't skimp on the woolens. pack everything from your mittens to your scarf for such trips.

7. Before you start packing, use the internet to see the weather, temperature and climate of the place you are going to. Any good travel website will tell you of what you need to pack as essentials. let that work as a guide for your packing.

8. Check if the place has affordable laundry services and make good use of them. That way, you will be able to pack for a two-week vacation with just clothes for one. If not, pack light and quick-drying clothes in case you have to wash them yourself.

9. If you plan to go shopping, skip out some items that you probably will buy from there. What you can skip out will depend upon what you plan to shop for mostly, which you must already have an idea about after your travel research on the internet. It could be woolens, cosmetics, shawls or even clothes.

10. Unless you are going to a remote village with no population, you will not fall short of enough places to shop for necessities. So don't panic if you forget anything even if it is your baby's diapers. You will be able to buy it from the first convenience store on your way.

RECIPES

Black Bean Quickie

(makes a dip or use as a sandwich spread)

salt and pepper

1. In medium bowl, roughly mash beans with a fork or masher.
2. Halve the avocado lengthwise and gently twist to separate it from the pit. Make lengthwise and crosswise cuts about 1/2 inch apart in the flesh of each half. Scoop the avocado cubes out of the skin and add to the beans.
3. Stir in parsley, chopped tomato. add salt and pepper to taste.

Yield: approx 2 cups.

DECORATING

Tips for Displaying Collections

Your love for collecting is an extension of your personality and should reflect in your home decor. However, not all of use are able to do justice to the wonderful pieces we collect. Often, the collected figurines and vintage items become an eyesore instead of bringing joy to the heart and you begin wondering if you should start cutting down on your favorite collecting hobby.

Well, you don't have to. You just need to find ways to display your stuff creatively so that it looks like a breathtaking collection instead of household clutter.

1. Confine your collections to one place or display them in several groups around the house. Grouping the objects makes them seem important and your guests will take notice of your collected pieces.

2. Decide upon the kind of platform that will be needed to display your collections. For smaller items like shells, stones and pebbles, a tray will be enough. For larger items like figurines and vintage mirrors, you will need shelves. Some items like vintage lace handkerchiefs and stamps can be mounted in frames and arranged on walls. Pretty buttons and vintage fabric swatches can be sewn on to fabric and then mounted.

3. It is not required that you display your entire collection at once. You can display only some of it and place the rest in cupboards and keep rotating the items for fresh displays every time.

4. When displaying your collections, try to make them as creative as possible. Group together some items of the same color together and place them along a contrasting color. Do not use too many colors at one single place.

5. Displaying all collectibles at the eye level makes the display monotonous. Arrange the collectibles at varying heights by using tiered shelves or group items of different heights together. Make a large piece the center of attraction by placing it at eye level and then group several smaller items around it.

6. Many of use have more than one collections to boast of. If you are devoting an entire shelf or wall for displaying collections, make the best use of it by rotating different collections on it. Rotate mirrors with figurines on shelves and shadowboxes, vintage linen in frames with paintings on a wall or shells with pebbles on a tray. This will ensure that you have a fresh display for your guests every time and also act as an outlet for your creativity.

MAKEUP

A Natural Makeup Look for Summer

Bright and bold colors are making an appearance everywhere with the onset of summer. Whatever the trends, summer always brings out the peppiest of colors in dresses. But many women make a mistake of wearing heavy makeup with bold colors which creates an imbalanced look which is too loud. Day time summer makeup should be kept to a natural look when wearing bright colors to strike the right balance.

Here are tips on how you can create a natural makeup look:

1. Apply a little oil-free light foundation to your face to make it look even. Don't use foundation generously as it will show terribly in the harsh sun. And make sure to rub the foundation very well to avoid and makeup lines.

2. Next, powder your face with pressed powder to make your face look fresh. Again, do not use too much of anything. Only use a quantity that is necessary to cover your entire face and keep you looking fresh.

3. Give your face some color by using a light bronzer. Use a shade that is only slightly darker than your skin tone.

4. Add a touch of blusher to your cheeks for a glowing look. Avoid using too much of blusher during the day. Save it for the formal evening parties.

5. Keep lip makeup to a minimum. If you can do without lipstick, just use a clear lip-gloss and keep lips nude. If you must have lipstick, use a lighter, more natural shade to complete your fresh, natural makeup look.
