Editor's Note

I was chatting with a friend long-distance yesterday. On asking 'What are you doing?', her reply was, "Trying to make the most of summer while it lasts." Stands true for most of us, isn't it. She was busy planning a party, assembling her recipes for preserves, planning trips to her farm to pluck raspberries, painting garden furniture and going out for almost every night for strolls, stargazing and drive-in movies. Your way of enjoying summer could be different but whatever way it is, do make the most of it. We have tried to incorporate some great summer ideas in today's issue and on the website for you and hope you like them.

DATING & ROMANCE

Five Fabulous Summer Dates

Happy couples put a lot of work into their relationships, making efforts to establish communication, support, respect and acceptance. But sheer enjoyment is at the foundation of all romantic relationships, whether the couple is years into a marriage or days into a summer romance. Dating expert Courtney Cooke encourages couples to take advantage of the leisurely pace of summer and throw some fun into the mix.

"Relationships take a lot of work," says Courtney Cooke, author of "Create a Date." "That's why it's particularly important to give yourself a break and have fun together, too!"

"Create a Date" is Cooke's book comprised of 52 romantic and fun things couples can do together. She advises that the following dates may ignite a spark hotter than the summer sun.

Attend a ballgame.

You'll have fun eating hot dogs and peanuts, drinking beer, cheering for the home team and singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the seventh-inning stretch.
Tip: Call in advance and ask the stadium staff to put a romantic message for your sweetheart on the scoreboard.

Go to an amusement park.

There's nothing like eating corn dogs and cotton candy while getting delightfully dizzy on the loop-de-loop rides.
Tip: Visit the park or fair at night. Enjoy the view from the Ferris wheel.

Go antiquing.

Make a pilgrimage to various antique shops, garage sales or flea markets. Look for artifacts from your childhood, such as baseball cards or Barbie dolls. Also keep an eye open for romantic paintings or cozy quilts so you can feather your nest together.
Tip: Antiquing will spur a trip down memory lane. Be sure to swap childhood stories as you shop.

Stargaze.

What could be better than sitting under the starlit sky, holding each other close? Be sure to wish on shooting stars.
Tip: Do a little research to find out when a meteor shower may be taking place. Bring binoculars along!

Relax.

Have a romantic movie or music festival. Feed each other yummy snacks and cozy up to one another on the couch. Allow each partner to select one move or CD.
Tip: Be sure to feast on aphrodisiacs such as chocolate, apricots, oysters or strawberries.

Cooke reminds couples that dates need not be fancy or expensive, so long as both partners find enjoyment. "Be friends first and foremost. You'll be having so much fun, the romance will follow."

CRAFTS

5 Easy Summer Craft Projects for Kids

Are you looking for ways to keep your kids busy during their summer holidays? Keep them creatively entertained for hours with these easy, yet engaging craft activities:

1. Painting Rocks: Your kids will love staying outdoors in your garden or backyard busy painting rocks of garden stones. Supply them with acrylic paints and brushes and let them use their own creative ideas. They could either paint little objects and scenes on larger rocks or paint smaller stones in single or multi colors.

2. Photo Frames: Photo frames can be made and/or decorated in many different ways. Ask kids to choose their favorite summer photos to be framed and supply them with plain plastic or wooden frames. Now ask them to embellish each frame with a theme that matches the photograph. A picture taken on the beach can be displayed in a frame embellished with sand and seashells. A birthday photo can have a frame embellished with birthday clipart, cutouts or stickers.

3. Wrapping Paper: Let your kids make different types of wrapping for use throughout the year to wrap presents for their friends' and teachers' birthdays. Give them paint and different household supplies that create various patterns on paper. For e.g. sponge, cut vegetables, carved buttons, jar lids etc. They can also make and store some for Christmas.

4. Bead Crafts: Assorted beads in different colors, shapes and sizes make for interesting craft supplies. Kids can create themed jewelry, bead art, pins and little decorations by stringing beads on to wire and then bending wire to create shapes.

5. Playdough: Homemade playdough is one of the oldest and still the most effective of keeping kids busy. Give the kids a 'summer project' to complete before the day ends in which they can make a summer scene or a number of summer themed objects.

Giving these crafts a 'summer' theme will not only give the projects an interesting twist, but it will also make your kids enjoy the season and wait for it to arrive soon next year!

FASHION

Flattering Dress Styles

Every time you look at a dress at display that makes you go 'ooh' and 'aah', you need to remind yourself to diet and lose weight in order to not let it pass the next time you see something like that. Didn't your frustration lad you to wonder if there were any flattering dress styles out there which really made you look gorgeous without having to get in shape. Thankfully for all of us who don't have the perfect 10 figures, there are quite some options for dresses that flatter our less-than-perfect figures and hide our problem areas. Here are some of the best choices:

1. Ruched Dress Styles: Dresses that are ruched at the neckline and allow for a cinched waistline help in concealing heavy breasts and bulging tummies and look very classy as well.

2. Jackets: Pair small jackets with your dresses to hide a heavy bust. Choose jackets that go well with your dress. Choose a patterned jacket with a solid colored dress and a solid colored jacket for a patterned dress.

3. Animal Prints: You can follow the fashion trends and look great by choosing animal prints. The confusing patterns are in vogue and also take away the attention from all your problem areas.

4. Jeans: Choose a pair of jeans that complements your body shape and you will never need to think twice to decide what to wear. Choose from classic and relaxed styles in dark monochromatic colors to find your perfect fit and stick to it.

5. Pleats: Just like ruched dresses, pleats in dresses and tops can hide a bulging tummy. If you are heavy on the upper side go in for these styles and pair with capris or pants that accentuate your slim lower body.

6. Empire Waist Line: Empire waists are a boon for all body shape problems starting from the tummy. If you are in need for a formal dress for a wedding or prom, choose gowns or dresses with an empire waist. Even for everyday use, you will find smart, trendy tops with empire waists.

7. Shirred Waists: Another great look like ruching and pleats is the shirred look. Light shirring at the waist will take attention to the slimmest part of your body and take away attention from problem areas.

8. Wrap-Style Tops: For almost all upper body problems, go in for wrap tops. You will look trendy as well as slimmer.

9. Three-Fourth Length Sleeves: Tops and dresses with three-fourth length sleeves will make your arms and the entire upper body slimmer.

10. Flowing Fabrics: Flowing fabrics such as charmeuse, lace, satin, silk etc. are very forgiving and hide all your lower body flaws depending upon the waistline you choose. Go for one of these fabrics for occasion and wedding wear.
