HALLOWEEN

Pumpkin Carving Ideas

Pumpkins all over are ready to turn into Jack O’ Lanterns. Pick some up from a patch and start your annual pumpkin carving ritual but do it with the tricks we have up our sleeve. Here are some fresh ideas for pumpkin-carving that are sure to inspire some of the best looking pumpkins in your neighborhood:

1. Cookie cutters are a great way to ensure perfectly carved pumpkins. Choose durable stainless steel cookie cutters like ghosts, witches, owls, stars, circles and pretty fall leaves to plan your design. Position the cookie cutters on the pumpkins and gently press in as much as you can. Now tap them in with a rubber mallet till they come out from the other side. Some cookie cutters may lose their shape and will not be re-usable.

2. Vellum or any translucent paper can be used to give out colored light from your carved pumpkins. Once you have made the cutouts on your pumpkin, cut vellum slightly larger than your cutout and then place it on the inside of the pumpkin blocking the cutout securing with straight pins on the inside. As paper is flammable, you will not be able to use candles. Use Tap lights instead.

3. Turn pumpkins into a pretty lantern by cutting out a regular design all around it. Cut a large ‘S’ template that fits the length of the pumpkin. Trace it all around the pumpkin at even intervals and cut them out. When you will light tea lights or tap lights inside, the pumpkin will look like a lantern.

4. Use a potato peeler to make features and indentations that do not require cutting out the complete piece but require just the peeling of the upper skin.

5. Give your pumpkin characters funky hair by poking holes in the top of their heads and sticking out Christmas lights from them.

HOME CLEANING

Give your fridge the 20-minute clean-out

(NC)—Cleaning the fridge means different things to different people. Due to all of life's time constraints, many of us aim to simply maintain by wiping up spills and residues when needed, putting off the big job until it's dire. Even the big job can be cut in half, say the experts, with a little forethought, plus the right, all-purpose cleaning aids. So here, courtesy of Mr. Clean is a thorough, 20-minute clean-out for your refrigerator – or perhaps 30 minutes if you have food for an army.

Time: Zero

• Turn the temperature-control to 'Off.' If you have a refrigerator with a drip pan underneath, remove it.

• Take all items out of the refrigerator and throw away food that is outdated or spoiled.

Time: 5:00 minutes

• Remove drawers, but leave shelves in place. Spray clean shelves, fridge interior walls and door racks with an Antibacterial Multi-Surfaces Cleaner. Wipe thoroughly and rinse. Dried, stubborn food stains can be removed easily with the proper cleaning tools like Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

• For odor control, place an open box of baking soda at the back of any shelf.

Time: 10:00 minutes

• Wipe or wash the drawers and remove food matter and stains from the drawer compartment. If stains are really stubborn, try Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Extra Power. It is 50% stronger than the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Original.

Time: 15.00 minutes

• Replace the drawers. Turn fridge on.

• Return food to the refrigerator, first wiping down bottles or jars that are sticky.

• Spray and wipe down the outside of the refrigerator, and you're done.

Time: 20.00 minutes

DECORATING

Halloween Decorating Ideas

If you’re in the mood to embrace the charming side of Halloween this year, check out these easy ideas from Jo-Ann Stores to add a playful and creative touch to your un-haunted house -- inside and out:

* Show your trendy side by dressing your table with vibrantly colored place settings that feature friendly spiders made from basic shapes with large animated eyes.

* Accent your mantle with spider votive holders on a yarn table runner to add quirky distinction to party d?cor.

* For Halloween entertaining, give your guests goofy handmade spider boxes filled with goodies and treats. With wiggle eyes and bright, glittery colors, these little favors are gifts your guests won’t soon forget! (See instructions in sidebar.)

* Greet guests and trick-or-treaters with a festive door wreath made with silly monster and jack-o’-lantern faces in a rainbow of colors.

* Colorful lights aren’t just for Christmas anymore. Use strings of lights to decorate outdoor trees and bushes for Halloween. For a fun, friendly feel, add lively and unexpected hues of green and magenta with traditional orange and blacks to bring fresh life to your outdoor lighting.

* Post unique stakes in the yard featuring cute character cutouts to welcome guests (instead of scaring them away!)

* Let kids make their own personalized treat bags this year by easily stitching two pieces of black felt together with a strip at the top for a handle. Glue on ears, eyes and whiskers to make a black cat or use green and orange felt to create a pumpkin.
