Editor's Note

The 2007 issue of 'Celebrating Christmas PDF Magazine' is ready and the 'preview reviews' are great. The reviews are what keep me going on, to be honest. We were hoping for a Monday release but the magazine will be available for download as soon as it goes up on Download.com. Those who chose to be notified of the release will be notified via email and I will also publish the download URL in the next issue. I look forward to the response this year.

HOLIDAYS

Creative Christmas Gifts

Christmas is always the time of year we consider to be the best opportunity to give something special to someone and show how much we appreciate him or her. The mall is full of wonderful, shiny and delicious gifts and the Internet offers countless items that we can send to someone without ever seeing the product in person. But sometimes there just doesn’t seem to be the perfect idea for one or two individuals. That’s probably when you need to become creative with your Christmas gift ideas.

Purchase a small pine tree. It can be living (usually costs around $6.00 for a small potted one it a nursery) or an artificial one. Consider who the gift is intended for when deciding which type of pine to purchase. Decorate the tree appropriately for the intended recipient. If there is an individual who loves a certain type of dog, decorate the tree with that type of dog as the focus. If they don’t have a particular interest that you feel you can decorate around, hand make your own ornaments and use them to hang on the tree. Present this very personal gift to make a special memory for someone.

If you know someone who loves to cook, is starting out on his or her own or is a newlywed, consider creating a cookbook from your own personal recipe collection. Over the years, we’ve all had favorite dishes and desserts that were requested over and over again. Share your ‘secrets’ with someone special. You might even want to make a small sampler of appropriate items to give as a part of this gift. It is truly a personal and touching gift.

Create a scrapbook including photos that will mean something to your intended recipient. Scrapbooking is quickly becoming a popular way to arrange one’s photos. A visit to your local craft store will give you some very simple yet decorative ideas on how to put even the smallest scrapbook together. Imaging the fun of sitting down and reliving the memories with a loved one!

Personal Christmas gifts are becoming more and more popular each year. The reaction and way these gifts are treasured is a testament to how much yours will be appreciated.

HOLIDAY DECORATING

Tips for Displaying Collectibles

Your love for collecting is an extension of your personality and should reflect in your home decor. However, not all of use are able to do justice to the wonderful pieces we collect. Often, the collected figurines and vintage items become an eyesore instead of bringing joy to the heart and you begin wondering if you should start cutting down on your favorite collecting hobby.

Well, you don't have to. You just need to find ways to display your stuff creatively so that it looks like a breathtaking collection instead of household clutter.

1. Confine your collections to one place or display them in several groups around the house. Grouping the objects makes them seem important and your guests will take notice of your collected pieces.

2. Decide upon the kind of platform that will be needed to display your collections. For smaller items like shells, stones and pebbles, a tray will be enough. For larger items like figurines and vintage mirrors, you will need shelves. Some items like vintage lace handkerchiefs and stamps can be mounted in frames and arranged on walls. Pretty buttons and vintage fabric swatches can be sewn on to fabric and then mounted.

3. It is not required that you display your entire collection at once. You can display only some of it and place the rest in cupboards and keep rotating the items for fresh displays every time.

4. When displaying your collections, try to make them as creative as possible. Group together some items of the same color together and place them along a contrasting color. Do not use too many colors at one single place.

5. Displaying all collectibles at the eye level makes the display monotonous. Arrange the collectibles at varying heights by using tiered shelves or group items of different heights together. Make a large piece the center of attraction by placing it at eye level and then group several smaller items around it.

6. Many of use have more than one collections to boast of. If you are devoting an entire shelf or wall for displaying collections, make the best use of it by rotating different collections on it. Rotate mirrors with figurines on shelves and shadowboxes, vintage linen in frames with paintings on a wall or shells with pebbles on a tray. This will ensure that you have a fresh display for your guests every time and also act as an outlet for your creativity.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL

Online Bookings Make Air Travel Cheaper And More Comfortable

The air traveler never had it so good. With hundreds of low-cost and full service airlines flying to the remotest locations of the world, and offering air fares lower than train fares, air travel is now everyone's cup of tea.

As a popular TV commercial for an airline depicts, people are actually taking a return flight to the nearest metro city for a shopping trip or for an appointment with a high-flying hair stylist! Gone are the days when a plane trip would be a style statement for the selected few. With the penetration of high speed internet in small towns and cities and with airlines offering cheap web fares, more and more people are preferring to give their travel agent a miss, and booking their tickets online. There are now several websites offering online ticket bookings for all domestic and international airlines under one roof.

Online booking has several advantages over traditional paper ticket bookings:

Cheaper Airfares: Airlines are looking to sell all vacant seats and they offer surprisingly cheap airfares on the internet. It is much cheaper for airlines to announce these fares online or via email rather than advertise them in the media. So people who book online always get the best deals and offers that are never advertised in the TV or print media. Last minute offers that are only available online can mean a huge saving on your travel bill and help airlines fill vacant seats. Airlines also offer cheaper airfares for seats that are booked months in advance, as they want to ensure long term booking commitments. Most of the time you can get the same plane seat for almost 50% less price online, if you book a month in advance.

Wider Choice of Flights: When you book a flight ticket online, you get a wider choice of flights for a particular sector. You can see whether the airline is a full service or a low-cost airline. You can compare the type of aircraft, the time taken by the flight and whether it is non-stop or a hopping flight. Thus, you can make a better informed and cost-effective decision. Travel agents will typically try to sell you tickets on an airline that gives them higher commissions. But when you book online, you choose the airline and aircraft of your choice.

Safe and Secure Bookings: With the advent of SSL encryption (Secure Socket Layer), your online credit card transactions are completely safe. All online travel booking websites offer 128 bit SSL encryption when asking for personal data, like your name, address and credit card number. Whenever you are providing this information online, make sure that the website address has changed from http:// to https://. The additional 's' stands for 'secure' and means that the connection from your computer to the booking website's server is a secure connection. Also make sure that you see a padlock icon in the lower right corner of your browser. All data sent over such a secure connection is encrypted and can only be read by the party that it was meant for. Even if someone hacks into the connection, he will see only garbage data. The chances of someone stealing your credit card information online are the same as someone stealing your credit card slips when you shop at a store. Now with almost every bank offering credit cards to its customers, online air ticket bookings have increased manifold. Online booking websites like Expedia.com, Yatra.com, MakeMyTrip.com and FlightGuru.in are booking more than a million air tickets everyday!

Choose your seat and Web Check-in: When you book a plane ticket online, you can see a seat map for your aircraft and choose your seat online. So now you can have your favorite window seat or aisle seat or choose a seat near the exit that gives you extra legroom. Most online booking websites also offer a web check-in facility. If you are traveling with just cabin baggage and do not have any check-in baggage, you can web check-in for your flight up to 48 hours in advance and print your boarding pass on your home or office printer. So you just walk up to security check and board your flight. No more standing in long check-in queues at the airport!

As you can see, online booking always gets you cheap flight tickets and assures you of the lowest airfares. So the next time you are flying, save yourself a lot of trouble and money, and book your airline tickets online.
