HOLIDAYS

Tips for a Tasty Vegetarian Thanksgiving

If you're hosting Thanksgiving at your house and are expecting vegetarian guests this year, don't worry about preparing one large meat eating meal, and another separate vegetarian meal. Most vegetarians do not require a 'meat equivalent' at Thanksgiving. Yes, traditionally Thanksgiving has largely about the food. But more importantly it's about family, togetherness, happiness and peace. And if this is your first Thanksgiving after transitioning to a vegetarian lifestyle, try some of these ideas to incorporate healthy food preparation into your meal that your vegetarian guests, and you as host, will be thankful for this Thanksgiving:

- Bake some stuffing outside of the turkey.

- Make a small portion of vegetarian gravy.

- Keep cooking utensils separate to prevent "cross-contamination" between meat foods and vegetarian foods.

- When recipes are adaptable, use substitutions like vegetarian broth, soy margarine (the formulations without whey are suitable for vegans), soy milk, and kosher marshmallows which are made without gelatin.

- Use vegetable oils instead of animal fats for frying, and vegetable shortening like Crisco for pie crust.

- Read ingredients lists carefully on pre-packaged foods, being aware of terms like gelatin, whey, and "natural flavors" that can be animal-derived.

- Prepare plenty of vegetable and fruit side dishes, but leave them plain.

- Offer plenty of breads, beverages, fresh fruits, and non-gelatin desserts, which are suitable without modification for most vegetarians.

- Invite your vegetarian guest to prepare a "Tofurky" or vegetarian 'turkey equivalent' entr?e to share with you the rest of your guests, or if you're hosting Thanksgiving, prepare a small one. Your meat-eating guests might just be curious enough to want to try it!

- Ask your vegetarian guest for help, tips, or recipes that would complement their vegetarian choice. You may find that your guest offers to help out in the kitchen or bring a dish from home. Please don't take a dish from home as an insult to your cooking; take it as a desire to share traditions at Thanksgiving. Even meat-eating homes can benefit from a healthy, nutrient-dense vegetarian recipe idea any time of the year!

- Most importantly - make TONS of new, delicious (not overly cooked) vegetables that are perfectly in season like squashes, sweet potatoes, and green beans, etc.

BEAUTY

Winter Skincare Tips

“Eating well is critical for your skin to be able to repair itself properly. Focus on lean protein, grains, healthy fats and lots of colorful fruits and vegetables each day and avoid high-fat, salty snack foods and refined sugar,” Krieger said.

“You should also use a sun block daily to decrease damage from the sun’s harmful rays as they can thin your skin and make redness more prominent,” Madfes added.

Drinking eight glasses of water every day, just like Mom said, turns out to be good for your skin as well. Water helps to maintain the skin’s elasticity and suppleness.

Other healthy activities that can make your body happy and your skin glow include:

* Exercise! It improves circulation and blood flow throughout the whole body.
* Get enough sleep. Your body renews itself while you’re sleeping. If you are not getting enough sleep your skin can show it through dark under eye circles, puffiness and breakouts.
* Don’t smoke. Smoking can accelerate the skin’s aging process and contribute to sallow skin and wrinkles in addition to numerous other negative health effects.
* Take your vitamins. A daily multi-vitamin provides the recommended daily allowance of, among others, vitamin C -- which helps hold cells together, vitamin A -- which supports skin growth and immunity, lycopene -- an antioxidant that protects cells and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which are important for normal tissue function.

In addition to building beauty from the inside out, women should pay particular attention to their skincare regimen. Careful cleansing and moisturizing can help deliver radiant, smooth, even-toned skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

A good moisturizer with added vitamins and nutrients works as a barrier to block out pollutants. Moisturizing regularly will provide a seal over the skin to keep moisture from escaping and also slowly release moisture into the skin. Using a gentle cleanser, without perfumes and dyes, will prevent skin irritations as will patting skin dry after cleansing.

Finally, cleaning and replacing cosmetic brushes and applicators regularly will help avoid introducing germs and bacteria into a carefully planned skin care routine.

Dermatologists and nutritionists confirm that the saying, “Beauty comes from within” is true after all. Eating right, exercising and reducing stress makes your body healthier and that shows in your skin. Once you’ve got that glow, simple skin care practices can help keep it and even enhance it.

CRAFTS

Thanksgiving Decorations Kids Can Make

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday! What a spiritual renewal to take a day to reflect over the past year about just how good God has been to you and your family, to give you harvest and shelter, health and hope. To get the most out of this joyous occasion, make some holiday crafts with your children. These days, Thanksgiving often gets squeezed out by Halloween's spooky decorations and the lights and gala of Christmas. With the following holiday crafts, your home can be decorated for this quieter but important celebration.

Turkeys are a natural choice for decorations. A familiar project at this time of year is for a child to trace around her hand and make the resulting drawing into a turkey. The thumb is the head and the fingers are the tail feathers all displayed. While many of the turkeys that are raised for food are now the domestic white variety, the turkeys eaten by the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving were the wild brown ones. The tail feathers on a wild turkey are brown, but they are iridescent. catching light and appearing to be multi-colored. This is why children color the tail feathers in bright colors.

The turkey's head has a wattle under the beak. This is a vertical flap of loose skin that is red colored. Be sure to draw this in order to make the hand turkey look like a turkey. Add skinny legs and bird feet. When done, the children can cut out the turkeys and hang them on the wall. It's really cute to make a whole flock of these turkeys in the sizes of all the hands in the family. The little hand shapes are particularly sweet.

Another nice turkey decoration to make when making Thanksgiving holiday crafts is a turkey door decoration. Make a brown construction paper body and head of a turkey. Now make a large number of colored feather shapes. Each family member writes on a feather something he or she is thankful for before attaching as part of the turkey's tail. Repeat until all the feathers are used, and hang the turkey on the front door to greet visitors with a message of gratitude. Make a sign to accompany the turkey that says "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good!" or simply "Be thankful!" or "We're thankful for you!" or whatever you like.

Children love making construction paper chains. To further decorate the house for Thanksgiving, let them make a paper chain in fall colors as one of their holiday crafts. Using 9 by 12 inch construction paper, cut the paper in half across the long side and cut the halves into one inch thick six inch long strips. Use a stapler to attach the ends of the strip into a circle. Loop the next strip into the circle and staple it. Continue the process alternating colors of brown, red, yellow, and orange. When the chains are long, you can drape them along the ceiling or stair rail. If you don't make the door turkey, the children can write something they're thankful for on each strip of paper before adding it to the chain.

Thanksgiving is too nice a holiday to let the other more commercial holidays crowd it out. By making holiday crafts to decorate the home for Thanksgiving, you can keep this day special, too. The extended family, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc., will be pleased to see the holiday crafts the young ones have made to decorate the house and make it cheerful for their visit.
