ORGANIZING

De-stress Last Minute Shopping by Creating A 'Gift Closet'

A spur of the moment party. An unexpected guest for the holidays. Or someone you just forgot on your list. Every year it’s the same … no matter how much you’ve planned to avoid it, you find yourself racing through the mall at the 11th hour shopping for last minute gifts. And regardless of how much you enjoy giving, last-minute shopping can really be stressful.

“Part of what’s stressful is that feeling of being overwhelmed -- there’s so much to do in such a short time,” says Dr. James Maddux, a professor of psychology at George Mason University.

Here are three easy steps you can take to reduce stress and increase your enjoyment of the Holidays.

1. Create a “Gift Closet.” -- What’s a gift closet? It’s a closet in your home where you can store a small assortment of gifts for those last-minute occasions. It’s a closet mainly for what some term as “outer circle” gifts. People in your “outer circle” include neighbors, work associates, hostess gifts, teachers, and service/delivery professionals (i.e. mail carrier, newspaper carrier, lawn service, housecleaner, etc.), among others.

2.Come up with gift ideas with broad appeal that can work in a variety of situations. Some of the most popular gifts are specialty candles. According to Bob Nelson, president of the National Candle Association, scented candles are the perfect choice. “Both men and women consider candles to be an always-acceptable and highly appreciated gift for a wide variety of occasions,” he says. “Research suggests over 90 percent of people think candles make appropriate gifts for the holidays, or any time of year. And every time the candles are used -- it will bring back positive memories of both the gift-giver and the occasion."

3. Shop around to find gifts that meet your budget and stock-up … so you’re ready at a moment’s notice. Many people recommend spending $15 to $25 on an “outer circle” gift. Anything less may send the wrong message … and there is no reason to spend more to get a great gift.

“I think the concept of a gift closet is very appealing,” says Rick Ruffolo, senior vice president of brand, marketing and innovation at Yankee Candle and the company’s chief scent officer. “It is important to make sure the gifts you select have wide appeal, are from a well-recognized gift brand, come from a home specialty or gift store with an open return policy, and would be something you would have in your own home.”

Scented candles make a great choice for the holidays. Terry Molnar, executive director of the Sense of Smell Institute in New York City, reinforces this observation. “Fragrance memory trumps reality,” she says, so that for many people, “having the right scent completes their picture of the perfect Christmas.”

“Most of our fond memories of Christmas are directly connected with particular holiday scents,” Ruffolo explains. “Scents like Yankee Candle’s Christmas Cookie, Balsam & Cedar, and Home for the Holidays instantly bring back nostalgic memories of baking cookies, tree trimming, and decorating your home with your family.”

GIFT IDEAS

Homemade Hanukkah Gift Ideas

Gifts are traditionally given on each of the eight days of Hanukkah. Rather than going with store-bought gifts this this year, why not make your own? Here are some ideas:

Clay Dreidel

You can craft a traditional Hanukkah dreidel out of clay, as the well-known song says! At your local arts and crafts supply store, you can find clay that's hardened by baking it in the oven. Before baking the clay, be sure to carve the traditional dreidel symbols on each side.

Hanukkah Placemats

Kids will love making a set of Hanukkah placemats. You can use dark blue and silver construction paper. Use a stencil and cut out the Star of David out of silver (or gray) paper. Then, glue your star onto the blue construction paper and allow the glue to dry. You can take your placemats to a photo or copy store and request lamination. There are also laminating kits at the craft store. Laminating your placemats will keep them clean and help them last longer.

PARTY PLANNING

Holiday Party Planning on a Budget

For many, throwing a party during the holidays -- when budgets are already stretched -- seems impossible. Good news -- your situation may not be as dire as you think. According to Coinstar, the average U.S. household has roughly $90 of forgotten change sitting around. It may be hiding between the couch cushions, in the junk drawer, the car or in a jar next to the bed. No matter where you find it, $90 is enough money to host a memorable party.

Here are some tips from top party planners on how to pull it off:

Invitations

There are many online sites that will send your invitations for free, but it isn’t the most personal approach. People love getting mail, especially at this time of year. Set the mood for your party by using past holiday photos or old holiday cards as postcard invitations. This is an inexpensive and fun way to set the personal tone of the party, and all you have to pay for is postage. Cost: $7

Venue

Instead of trying to rent out a space like a hall or restaurant that can be costly and usually has a minimum dollar amount set on food and drink, host the party at your home. Sure it will require a little elbow grease to clean up and set up, but get the kids involved and the work will get done faster. The holidays are all about spending time together, after all. Cost: $0

Food/Beverages

Instead of purchasing and preparing all of the food yourself, which would not only be time consuming but expensive, make it a themed potluck. “Our Favorite Holiday Meals” is a popular one this time of year. You can prepare a holiday dish your mother taught you how to make and ask all your guests to do the same. Those who don’t cook can volunteer to bring the wine/beer and other drinks. Cost: $40

Party D?cor

Take a do-it-yourself approach with your party decorations. Instead of buying wreaths, centerpieces and ornaments at a store, make them yourself. Wrap an inexpensive door wreath found at a craft store or twigs from the yard with festive bows, place pillar candles of various sizes on a foyer tables, add small white lights around doorways, and put family photos from the previous year on display throughout the house. This is a great way to spark conversation among guests that don’t know each other very well. Don’t forget festive napkins and plates for your table and bar area! Cost: $15-40

Finishing Touches

Finally, don’t forget the small details like music, party favors and of course a gift for the “grab”. Load your MP3 player with 2-3 hours holiday favorites. Holiday ornaments make great party favors -- fill a clear bowl with a variety of ornaments for your guests to take when they leave. And, if you’ve invited guests to participate in a gift exchange, it’s a good idea to have a few extra for those who forget. Candles, coffee and chocolate are inexpensive, and usually appreciated.

Finally, that $90 that may be sitting in your home can easily be used to supplement your holiday budget - for free! Many Coinstar Centers offer free coin counting when you place the value of your change onto gift cards or eCertificates from retailers like Amazon.com, Circuit City, iTunes, Starbucks and more. Visit www.coinstar.com for details.
