HOUSEHOLD BUDGETING
Cutting your Kids' Schooling Costs
Whenever the school season is just around the corner, there's only
one thing that parents are thinking about - the impending costs.
Education is a primary right and a pertinent need of every child but
it can become very costly. Availing of scholarships and education
grants for your children is the best way to get them through
schooling. But of course, only a small percentage of children can be
given these privileges.
There are simple and effective measures that parents can employ in
cutting the costs of their children's schooling, especially during
the back-to-school season. Most often, these measures are often
taken for granted, but don't miss out!
Organize and Save
Keep an inventory of your children's school supplies and keep it
organized. If you are not organized, you will be spending more money
on replenishing your supplies. Small things like pencils and crayons
may not cost too much, but if you replenish your supplies
unnecessarily, you are losing valuable money.
You should also try involving the kids when making the inventory.
This will give them a sense of ownership for their things and would
know where to take and put their things.
Tax Holidays
Tax holidays are often offered by many states during the
back-to-school season. Price ceilings will be put on different
school gears. You might want to do a little research and ask about
the schedule and the details of the tax holidays in your area.
Bulk Buying
It's a basic economic principle - "the more you buy, the more you
save". Well, this is applicable if you are buying a specific item
which you will really need in the near future. In buying pencils,
for example, you might want to buy a box rather than buying one for
each of your kids. Face it, you will be needing to replenish these
after some time, so might as well avail of the lower price by buying
in bulk.
Transportation
You might want to consider buying your child a bicycle for him to
bring to school. This, of course, is not always feasible. Finding a
cheap and safe way to bring your children to school daily is an
important thing. Car pools and school transportation services are
options that you can look at.
Snacks
Whenever you have the time and energy to prepare food for your
children, do so. You will not only be saving on the pocket money
that you will give to them but you are also secured that your
children are eating healthy and safe meals.
Getting your children through school is a hard task and a costly
one. Saving money through practical and simple means can assist you
in this endeavor. The benefits will eventually add up to bring a
brighter future to your children.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
Easy Ways for DIY Home Improvement
Why pay for home improvement when you can do it
yourself? Here are some ways you can take up the jobs yourself:
> You can enhance your home’s existing concrete
surfaces using acid stains, acrylic stains, epoxy paints, and
scoring techniques.
> If you are tired of looking at dreary gray concrete, there are
some easy projects for the serious home improvement do-it-yourselfer
to give your patio, driveway, garage, etc. a refreshing new look.
> Decorative concrete work costs double or even triple that of
regular concrete. This is why many people cannot afford it.
> There are inexpensive ways to decorate concrete after it has cured
without having to pay skilled tradesmen.
> Acid based concrete stains are becoming more and more popular for
coloring concrete surfaces. They chemically react with the
cementitious material to produce permanent color with variegated or
mottled appearance like that of marble. This results in a natural,
elegant looking surface.
> Water based concrete stains are an alternative to acid stains and
are much more user friendly because they’re much less toxic. These
stains do not chemically react with the concrete; they are absorbed
into the surface pores and act like a dye. The big advantage of
water based stains is the wide array of colors available.
> If you want to venture beyond the basic staining of concrete,
consider using some scoring techniques to create patterns on the
surface.
> You can make your concrete look like a tile floor for example. It
is up to your imagination. An angle grinder with a 4 inch grinding
or cutting wheel is the ideal tool for this.
> The important thing to remember when scoring is to draw the
pattern on the concrete first and make sure you are satisfied with
the way it looks because scoring is irreversible.
Epoxy paints make an excellent coating for garage floors and
basement floors. Many commercial floors have epoxy coatings because
of their durability and resistance to chemical spills as well as
their appearance.
> In recent years, however, it has become very popular for
residential use with an increasing availability of different colors.
This is not a difficult project, but the key to successful
application is surface preparation.
> Epoxy paints have also become available in a water based form
making it safe for the do-it-yourselfer and ideal for indoor
applications. They cost a little more than stains. For a 400 square
foot garage, you’ll spend about $200 for the materials needed for
this project.
PARENTING
Helpful Tips for New Parents
* Diapers: Most babies that are fed using the PDF
method usually need a diaper change at each feeding time. This means
that your baby will need about 6-8 diapers a day or more. Many new
parents time the diaper changes with the after dinner bowel
movement, but if you miss it, you will just have a few more diapers
to change during the day.
* Diaper rash: Sensitive skin is a common problem for some babies
and they may get a diaper rash due to a food allergy, yeast
infection, sitting too long in a wet or messy diaper, or teething.
If you notice your baby beginning to get a diaper rash, talk to your
pediatrician about which diaper rash medicine will work for your
baby.
* Growth spurts: Growth spurts can start as early as 10 days after
your baby’s birth. Growth spurts usually are preceded by a sleepy,
lethargic day and a big jump in appetite. Growth spurts may happen
again at 3, 6, and 12 weeks and again at 4 and 6 months. If you
begin to notice that your child is not as satisfied with the amount
that you have been feeding her previously, then she may be beginning
a growth spurt period. If you are breastfeeding, you may want to add
a feeding or two to satiate your baby’s appetite and to help
increase milk production.
* Immunizations: With all of the conflicting reports on
immunizations, you may be unsure about whether or not you want your
child to receive immunizations. I think that there are simply too
many fatal diseases that can be prevented by immunizing your baby to
take the chance. If you are unsure, then you need to talk with your
pediatrician, but understand that the reason that the infant
mortality rate is so low in this country is because immunizations
are routinely done.
* Pacifiers & thumb sucking: If you breastfeed, do not allow your
child to use you as their pacifier. If your baby seems to have a
need to suck beyond eating, then you need to give them a pacifier.
There is no “nipple confusion” between a breast nipple and a
pacifier as they are very different in feel and taste. Babies will
know the difference between the two. Some children do not want a
pacifier but will suck on their thumb. If you don’t have a problem
with it, then let them.
* Spitting up: It is very common for babies to spit up, but some
babies do it more than others. If your baby is growing normally,
then there is no need to worry about it. Projectile throwing up is
not the same as spitting up. Projectile throwing up is a violent
reaction to reject the contents of the stomach and not just
“burping” up a little milk. If your baby does this frequently,
consult your pediatrician.
