LET'S TALK BUSINESS

Three Months Until Christmas

Most of us are trained to start thinking about Christmas after Thanksgiving, but online, if you wait until Thanksgiving to start promoting Christmas gifts you'll already be too late. Now is the time to put together your holiday campaign!

Here are some of the things you have to get done before people start shopping for their loved ones:

1. Design the webpages for seasonal products. You don't need to link the rest of your website to them just yet, but it will take time to get them optimized for search engines, submitted, and listed.

Once the pages are finished, strongly consider paying for listings in Inktomi (MSN), Fast and Alta Vista. Your pages will be listed in a week or less, and re-visited every 48 hours or so. This will give you an opportunity to adjust your pages for the best possible rankings before the Christmas rush, if you don't get to the top of the list the first time.

2. Get links to your new pages. This is, perhaps, the most important thing you have to do early, but you can't do it until you've designed the pages you want people to link to!

Remember, the search engines take time to recognize new links and apply them to your search engine rankings. This time of year, when many people are creating seasonal pages, a few links can make a big difference in the search engines!

Convince other website owners to link to your holiday pages specifically by writing an article and including them in the resource box or developing strategic partnerships. If you already have strategic partners, such as affiliate websites, give them an incentive to link to your new pages.

3. Write holiday advertisements. Many publications sell more advertising during the holidays, so the time between your ad purchase and the time it runs will be longer. Submitting your advertisement early will allow you to choose when your ad will run, rather than simply getting the last available slot in the classifieds.

Get a head start on your Christmas promotions by designing your pages early, getting people to link to them, and writing special advertisements before the holiday rush begins. By starting early, you can make the most out of your website during the holidays.

Good luck!

RECIPES

All-Season Peach Pie

Ingredients:

Unbaked 9" pie shell
2 (1 lb.) cans peaches, well drained (halves, sliced or chopped)
1/3 cup sugar (use 1/2 cup if using fresh peaches)
3 Tbsp. cornstarch
3/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 cup heavy cream
3/4 tsp. vanilla
Whipped cream

Method:

Arrange peaches in bottom of pie shell (if using halves arrange cut side up). Combine sugar, cornstarch, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg, salt, cream and vanilla. Pour over peaches in shell; sprinkle with remaining nutmeg. Bake at 400'F for 40 minutes of peaches are tender. Serve with whipped cream.

CRAFTS

Transferring Patterns

Dressmaker's carbon is suitable for marking smooth fabrics and comes in a variety of colours from light to dark. Many patterns are available in hot-iron transfer form, or you can make your own patterns with a special hot-iron transfer pencil. When using any marking method, transfer the thinnest line possible, so that you can cover all the transferred markings with the embroidery stitches.

Place dressmaker's carbon paper coloured side down on the right side of the fabric. Place pattern right side up over carbon paper. Pin in each corner or use sewing tape. Use a dry ballpoint pen to trace the design or roll a tracing wheel over the pattern lines.

For the hot-iron method, cut transfers apart. Test transfer on a scrap of fabric. Position transfer on right side of fabric. Pin or tape corners where iron will not rest. Use temperature setting as indicated on transfer package. Press one area for a few seconds, lift corner to make sure the design is transferring properly. Lift iron and press another area without moving the iron. Continue in this manner until the complete design is transferred.

When using a hot-iron pencil, first trace the design onto tracing paper with a regular graphite pencil. Turn traced design facedown, and using transfer pencil, trace the design. Place the hot-iron transfer tracing against the right side of fabric. Pin where iron will not rest. Press one area at a time until the whole design has been transferred.

You can also draw designs freehand directly onto the fabric using a dressmaker's pencil. Select the white end for medium to dark fabrics and the blue end for white or light fabrics. Stitch over the pencil marks.

You can use an air or water-soluble marking pen for transferring designs. Air-soluble marks disappear anywhere from a few hours to a day or two depending on the humidity. Water-soluble marks can be removed by dampening the fabric with water.
