LET'S TALK BUSINESS
9 Keys to an
Effective Logo
by Erin Ferree (DCW Member)
Many small companies do not invest in a professional-looking logo.
But,
the right logo, with the right characteristics, will boost your
visibility, credibility and memorablity - which means more business
for
you!
These characteristics include:
* Consistency in use of your logo, tagline, materials. Repetition
helps people to remember who you are and what you do.
* Memorability, so that your logo sticks at the forefront of your
potential clients' minds. That way, they'll think of you next time
they
have a need.
* Meaningfulness, so that your logo can spread the message about the
distinguishing characteristics of your business.
* Uniqueness, which helps you stand out from the crowd. For example,
if everyone in your industry uses a particular symbol (i.e., travel
agencies often use globes in their logos), try to use something else
-
that way, your logo doesn't just look like everyone else's.
* Professionalism, in the quality of the graphics, the printing and
the paper your materials are printed on.
* Timelessness in your logo will ensure that you don't have to
redesign your logo in just a few years, and that your investment and
equity in your design will be lasting.
* Differentiation between the colors in your logo - and not just in
terms of hue, but in terms of value as well, so that it translates
well to
black and white or greyscale, and so that colorblind people can read
it.
* Unity between the different elements in the logo. The logo must
fit together as a single unit, and not just appear as a jumble of
elements
pasted together.
* Scalability, so that your logo looks equally good on a business
card and on a sign for your business (or a billboard!), and at every
size
in between. A second part of this is legibility of your business's
name at
different logo sizes, and making sure that your designer chooses a
font
that is readable.
Having a professionally designed logo can really give your business
a
jumpstart, and help your business to get the attention - and clients
- you
need to succeed.

FITNESS
Fitness Tip of the week
"ABC's" for Health
Learning and remembering all the pyramid and other food
guidelines can be so confusing and in truth, is not as important as
actually eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight for you
and staying active each day. If the new set of rules seems
overwhelming, consider your current eating habits and follow the
"ABCs" for health from the Dietary Guidelines for Good Health. They
are:
- Aim for fitness
- Build a healthy base
- Choose sensibly
An entire 19-page document is available at
www.ars.usda.gov/dgac and can be read and/or printed anytime.
BEAUTY
Hair Care FAQ
Is shampooing daily harmful for
the hair?
Everyday washing shouldn??™t be a concern as long as you are using a
mild shampoo, which can suit your normal hair. Something that
nourishes while it cleanses. If your hair doesn??™t feel unclean, just
sweaty it is okay to simply rinse out the sweat too if you choose
to.
Also, after wash, keep your damp hair in a turbaned towel for about
15 minutes. Finger comb it in a gentle massage-like movements and
only brush gently.
The right way of washing Hair
Oiling my hair every time does not help it in any way. On the
contrary, you end up using more shampoo every time, damaging the
hair??™s natural oil balance, making it dry. Once a fortnight oiling
is just fine.
To wash your hair, always wet it first before applying shampoo.
Then, lather it by massaging with your fingertips. Rinse thoroughly
until squeaky-clean. Pat dry and finger-comb out the tangles or use
a wide toothcomb.
How to treat split ends?
Split ends, which are mainly caused when your hair??™s cell fail to
hold together are result of exposure to harsh elements, chemicals or
even excessive brushing.
The right kind of shampoo will minimize hair damage. Meanwhile it is
also important to replenish ceramides, which are hair??™s natural
cement, and is responsible for holding the hair cells together. A
ceramides enriched shampoo will help repair hair fibre and reduce
split ends.
