CELEBRATING NEW YEAR

Celebrate New Year's at Home with Fun Family Traditions

New Year's Eve doesn't have to be a night on the town. Spare the hassle of finding a baby-sitter and spend time at home with the kids and these New Year ideas from Cynthia MacGregor's book "Fun Family Traditions":

1. Instead of making resolutions, have each family member decide on one bad habit they'd like to break. Write the habits on pieces of paper and take turns throwing the paper into the fireplace.

2. Let each family member make predictions about what they think will happen in the New Year. Write them down and save them to read next year.

3. Make plans for the New Year by letting family members talk about the things they'd like to do in the coming months. This is a great time to talk about where everyone would like to go for vacation, what activities they'd like to participate in, or any big changes they'd like to see??¦like maybe getting a dog!

4. Keep expenses down and have the party at home. Have a special meal and favorite videos or music. Let the kids stay up as late as they want and provide some noisemakers! Reminisce on all the fun you've had, or reflect on the changes and how your family has grown.

WINTER GAMES FOR KIDS

Winter Games beyond Snow Angels and Sledding

As popular as snowmen are, there are only so many that a child can create in one season. But don't give up and just place your offspring in front of the television until spring.

"Snow brings joy to children," says Trish Kuffner, author of "The Children's Busy Book: 365 Creative Games and Activities to Keep Your 6- to 10-Year-Old Busy" (Meadowbrook Press, $9.95; www.meadowbrookpress.com).

"But to keep them entertained, you have to mix it up every once in a while," Kuffner says. "By teaching them new games, you'll make your children happy. And you'll also have the knowledge that you are showing them how to be creative."

From her book, Kuffner offers these unique games for children to play in the winter.

Target Practice

Cut three or four holes, each about a foot in diameter, in an old sheet or blanket. Fasten this target with lots of clothespins to a rope strung between two trees or posts. Have each child stand about 10 feet away and throw snowballs at the holes. Score one point for each snowball that goes through a hole. The first player to score a set number of points is the winner. A child playing alone can see how many snowballs it takes to score a certain number of points.

Ice Sculptures

Fill buckets, plastic containers or ice cube trays with water. Set them outdoors overnight to freeze. Dip each mold in warm water for a few seconds to loosen the ice. Turn the mold upside down to slide the ice out. Let your child build an ice sculpture. To stick two shapes together, spray water on the surfaces you want to join and hold them together for about 10 seconds.

Snow Painting

Add a few drops of food coloring or a spoonful or two of tempera paint to a spray bottle full of water. Let your child paint the snow by spraying it. Or have her brush on undiluted tempera paint poured into small containers.

Button, Button

This game requires four or more players. Make snowballs, one less than the number of players you have. For example, if eight children are playing, make seven snowballs. Hide a brightly colored button inside one of the snowballs. Choose one player to be "It." The other players stand in a circle around him and pass the snowballs quickly until he tells them to stop. He then guesses which player has the snowball with the button inside. The players break open their snowballs to see if he has guessed correctly. If he has not, he's again "It" for the next round. If he guessed right, the player holding the button becomes "It."

These and many other games are described in Kuffner's book "The Children's Busy Book: 365 Creative Games and Activities to Keep Your 6- to 10-Year-Old Busy." Pick up a copy today to keep your child entertained year-round.

PARTY PLANNING

Ten Tips for an Exciting New Year's Party

(FeatureSource) - The biggest party night of the year is New Year's Eve. Start the year off right at a fantastic party for family and friends with these ideas from Penny Warner's book, "The Best Party Book" (Meadowbrook Press).

  • Write the invitations in felt-tip pen on a plastic champagne glass, or on a copy of a calendar.
  • Ask guests to bring something or dress in an outfit that represents a highlight of 2004. The fun will be in guessing what each event is.
  • Ask each guest to write a few New Year's resolutions. Collect them and read them out loud, trying to guess whose resolutions they are.
  • Decorate your walls with newspapers and headlines from the past year, or use newspapers as placemats.
  • Insert a funnel into the mouth of deflated balloons and add confetti. A party supply store can carefully fill the balloons with helium. Float them on the ceiling and pop them at midnight.
  • Have a white elephant exchange by asking guests to bring a holiday gift they weren't happy about. Display the gifts on a table and use them as prizes for the games.
  • Other fun prizes are clocks, humorous calendars, a bag of fortune cookies, a mug with coffee, aspirin, and Alka Seltzer, a "Year in Review" copy of a favorite magazine.
  • Champagne is everyone's favorite, but try serving it with a cherry or strawberry at the bottom of each glass.
  • Fill cream puffs with vanilla ice cream, fruit, or chocolate mousse. Top with whipped cream. Remember??¦your New Year's diet doesn't start until tomorrow!
  • Right after midnight, serve a breakfast buffet. After all, it is morning, and it's a good way to sober up guests.

"The Best Party Book" is a creative guide that shows even the most inexperienced host how to throw a great party. It can be found in bookstores everywhere.
