SHOPPING
Use a Price Book
by Sandy Shields
Price Books: You have probably heard about them, or read about them
in budgeting articles. But what exactly is a Price Book?
A Price Book is a powerful tool used by smart shoppers to help them
save money. It is a practical technique used to record prices of
frequently purchased items.
Consumers armed with a current Price Book will know if an advertised
"special" is truly a bargain or not. Costly mistakes can be avoided,
and much money can be saved by knowing how much to pay for items
used most often.
A Price Book is a personal item created by each individual shopper.
There are various formats and suggestions one can follow, but the
effectiveness of a Price Book is determined by the way it is
prepared, and if it represents the typical purchases of the
individual who created it.
A Price Book can be simple or complex; there is no set way to manage
one. A person should try a few different ways to determine which
method is best for their personal use. Here are a few methods to
choose from when starting a Price Book:
Large notebook
Small, pocket size notebook
Spreadsheet
Index cards
Address book
My personal preference is a small notebook that I can carry along
with my coupons. I use a simple format. I list the products that I
buy most often in alphabetical order, with the lowest price I have
found next to each item. I have realized that with whatever method
used, it is best to list or file alphabetically.
I started my Price Book by carrying an 8x11 notebook with me to the
store. Each item that I purchased was written at the top of a page
in the notebook. I listed the price for that particular store, the
date, and a few other brand comparisons. Then each time I shopped at
another store, I would add the prices for that store.
After visiting each store in my area, I was able to see which ones
consistently had the lowest prices on the products I purchased.
However, I also found that no one store had the lowest prices on
everything. In order to buy at the lowest prices, I have to shop at
several stores, and be willing to use many brand names.
Unfortunately, I cannot save money by being brand loyal.
Once I had been keeping my Price Book for several months, I knew the
lowest price that I could pay for my regular purchases, and how to
avoid paying over that amount. I see advertisements everyday
claiming to offer the lowest prices on products for sale. Since I
began investing my time and efforts into my own price book, I am no
longer deceived by false advertising claims.
Keeping a Price Book is one easy way consumers can be smart
shoppers. Start your own Price Book today, and you too will see the
patterns that the stores and manufacturers follow. But don't just
start one; be sure to use it regularly once you have the prices
listed. It is a practical tool to help you save. Happy Shopping!

Do Your Own Woodwork
Maintenance
by Paulina Roe
If you have wood floors or wood trim, you can keep
it in good shape with minimal effort.
To clean wood floors - just use warm water with an
amount of vinegar - perhaps ½ or 1 cup to a gallon or
two of water. Rather than splashing it all over your floor
in a wet puddle, take a sprayer and spray it down so your
mop stays drier. Using vinegar counteracts the minerals
and water staining properties of the water.
Keep it looking nice and keep it strong by applying
polyurethane once or twice a year. Clean the floor
and then put a thin layer of polyurethane down -
first experiment with using a sponge brush or a bristle
brush to see which works better for you to avoid
bubbles. Do this on a warmer type day so the poly
runs more loosely. Plus you can open windows for
ventilation of the fumes.
For the wood trim, simply take steel wool - coarse for
dirty areas. Run the steel wool over the dirt and then
use fine steel wool and rub it over the already cleaned
areas. Once you do that (you are only trying to get the
wood clean, not take off any finish), run a thin layer
of stain over the wood, and finish off with a thin layer
of polyurethane. You'll spruce up your woodwork in
no time. For doors you might just want to spread a
layer of stain without the extra work.

HEALTH
Are You at Risk for Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease where the body
cannot properly
produce or use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that turns
the foods you eat into energy. If your body cannot turn
food into energy, not only will your cells be starved for
energy, you will also build up glucose (sugar) in your
blood. This will lead you to have "high blood glucose
levels." Over years, the high blood glucose level can
damage major organs like your heart, eyes, and kidneys.
Types of Diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes is caused by a total lack of insulin that,
in turn, produces high blood glucose levels. Type 1 is
most often is seen in children, but can develop in adults.
If you have Type 1, your health care provider might
recommend scheduled, nutritious meals, exercise,
medication, and frequent blood sugar level tests.
Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the body does not
produce enough insulin or cannot properly use insulin.
This is the most common type. The treatment may be
similar to Type 1.
Pre Diabetes or Borderline Diabetes may occur
before a Type 2 diagnosis. Blood glucose levels will
be higher than normal. Good nutrition and exercise
may be recommended by your health care provider as
treatment for pre diabetes. Even a slightly high blood
sugar level is insidious and could affect major organs
over time.
Gestational Diabetes occurs in pregnant women that have
high blood glucose levels. This type of Diabetes can harm
both Mother and baby. If you have Gestational Diabetes,
your health care provider may prescribe meal plans,
exercise, daily testing and medicine.
Risk Factors:
The exact causes of Diabetes are still unknown. However,
heredity, obesity and lack of exercise may play a role.
Here are some general risk factors:
1. Your siblings or parents have diabetes.
2. You are more than 20% overweight.
3. You do not exercise.
4. You have had gestational diabetes or you have had a
baby over 9 lbs.
5. You have high blood pressure.
6. Your cholesterol level is not normal.
How to care for you Diabetes:
According to the American Diabetes Association, people
with Diabetes have the same nutritional needs as everyone
else. In addition to prescribed medications, well-balanced
meals may help you keep your blood glucose level as normal
as possible.
Also, just like everyone else, exercise is an important part
of staying healthy. Exercising with diabetes does require a few
extra safety steps that your health care professional can make
you aware of.
Nutritious meals, an exercise routine, and using your
NutriCounter along with the help of your doctor may aid you
in controlling your Diabetes. Diabetes will never truly go away,
but with proper nutrition, exercise and prescribed medications,
it can be controlled.
