GROPING HOPE...

Here I sit at 9 AM, writing. So what, you say. You've been
up four hours and done the wash, battled rush hour traffic,
and run three errands already. Sorry. I don't do mornings.

I work until 2 AM. That's when my writing flows like water
downhill. But we have a contractor building a brick grill
in the backyard today, and hubby had to go to the building
supply for more mortar. "You're in charge," he said. I
HATE being in charge of other people. Did it for 25 years
at the old day job, and you'd think it would be second nature
for me...but it isn't.

Just like it isn't in my nature to get up early. Arose at
7:20 after going to bed at 2:30 AM. I feel like I'm running
through mud right now. Sucking down iced tea, I'm struggling
to stir. Surprisingly, this is the editorial that came to mind
as I loaded the washer - trying to do anything that didn't
incorporate my mind.

I have two thoughts on writing times...

1. Identify which time is prime for you, and protect it
with a vengeance. Make sure you steal part of that time of
day (or night) and write. Fight for it. Make it a habit for
everyone in your household. At a certain time, you WILL be at
your computer, pounding the keyboard (not reading email).
You will train your family like you would a dog to go to
the door to be let outside.

2. On occassion, sit down at the opposite of your word
tripping, thought cranking time of day and see what happens
to spill out. It will be different. Your brain isn't used
to functioning with characters, plots and settings, so it
just might come up with whole new options for you.

Okay, I've done it. I've managed to complete this editorial
for you. Still feel like my eyes can't focus, my fingers
tangle and my brain is mush. My mother still laughs at me
being an UN-morning person. If it hasn't happened by now
(age 50), it ain't ever gonna happen. My shining hours
occur at night.

My latest column for WOW-Womenonwriting is live. The topic is
getting away from civilization to retreats, and all the pictures
came from my lake place. Those editors at WOW do a fabulous job
at composition and have so much fun making an article come alive.

Write What You've Learned:
Turning to Your Past Education for Future Writing Success

By Lorie Witkop

We come to the field of writing with different backgrounds
and different experiences, some of which include extensive
education.  As an addition to the standard advice to "write
what you know," I suggest we should "write what we've learned."

Clear Out Your Folders
Look back through what you've written in the past.  I'm not
suggesting anyone will buy your sixth grade "What I Did Over
Summer Vacation" paper, but I am a fan of making the most of
past work.  If there's something sitting in your basement or
in the far corners of your hard drive you can turn into a
paying assignment, then why not do it?  The first piece I ever
sold was a reworked assignment, a final reflection on an online
graduate class that fit nicely with a website focusing on
distance education.

Look for Research and Inspiration
Maybe reading your research paper on Ancient Greece will lead
to a poem for a children's social studies magazine.  Perhaps a
persuasive essay you wrote in basic composition would make a
great op-ed piece if you insert a current political example.

As writers we're constantly improving our craft, so don't be
surprised when you cringe at something you wrote five years ago.
Think of these pieces as rough drafts in need of polishing.
You also may need to create sidebars and quote expert opinions,
not usually a concern in a term paper.

Carus Publishing is the home of several children's magazines
focusing on science, social studies and history.  Feature articles,
supplemental articles and fiction pay $0.20-$0.25/word while the
pay for poems, activities and other pieces varies.  Visit
individual magazines' guidelines for upcoming themes.
http://www.cricketmag.com/pages_content.asp?page_id=6

The World and I seeks in-depth commentary on current issues,
the arts, natural science, life, books, culture and modern
thought. Pay varies depending on the complexity of the article,
the author's experience and length.
http://www.worldandi.com/guidelines.asp

Write About Your Experiences as a Student
Many publications exist solely for the purpose of helping
students navigate the world of college, whether they're fresh
out of high school or returning for further education as a non-
traditional student.  Tap your own experiences to provide helpful
advice to the next generation of students.

Back to College focuses on the needs of adult students returning
to college, paying $60-$85 for articles of 1,250-1,500+ words
and $35-$42.50 for reprints.
http://www.back2college.com./guide.htm

Use Knowledge From Your Major
Take advantage of your advanced studies to write about the hot
topics and big ideas in a field.  For instance, I've written
several pieces for web publications on the theory of multiple
intelligences, a common discussion topic in education classes,
but not something of which the general public is typically aware.

Were you a religious studies major?  Hinduism Today
(http://www.hinduismtoday.com/writers.shtml) is looking for
200-500 word short pieces and 1,000-4,000 word features on the
"spiritual, humanistic and cultural dimensions of Hinduism."
The magazine pays $0.08/word and $20/photo with special rates
negotiated for professional photography.

Did you make it through business school? My Business
(http://www.mybusinessmag.com/about/guide.php) is a publication
of the National Federation of Independent Business.  They're
looking for 300-800 word freelance contributions on small business
issues, including personal essays from small business owners and
profiles of unusual businesses.  Pay rates vary and will be
discussed upon acceptance of a query.

Perhaps you spent your college days in the science lab?
Edmund Scientific is looking for articles on education-related
scientific articles, home and classroom experiments, science
fair projects, lesson plans and fun activities.  They pay $25-
$50 for 250-750 word articles, and $25-$100 for other pieces.
http://scientificsonline.com/article.asp?ai=124&bhcd2=1129795966

Know When to Let Go
Sometimes it's best to let those lost words stay buried.
Maybe the amount of work required to polish a piece isn't
cost-effective.  There just may not be a market for an article
based on your insightful analysis of the mating habits of tsetse
flies.  Look to the past for an unexpected source of income and
inspiration, but don't let old work keep you from always
moving forward in your submissions.
