EDITOR'S PIECE OF MIND ========================================================== Do you carry a little notebook for those mind spurts? I call them mind spurts because I can be drifting along thinking about everyday things or contemplating the day's responsibilities when -pop- there comes a thought I can use for an article, an editorial, or a column. And if I do not write it down, it is gone. I wonder how many best-selling ideas I've let go down the tubes because I did not write it down. We tell ourselves, "I'll remember that - it's too good a thought to forget." But five minutes later it's gone. And you do not realize it is gone because you do not even recall the thought. Life sweeps you up and carries you away like a swollen river if you aren't careful. Take the time to jot down the details, the little ideas, and the powerful little mind spurts that give your writing character, taste and emotion. AND...do not forget to revisit them. I have every one I've ever toted. More times than not the pages contain a good Internet URL, a phrase I overheard, or an email to remind me to sign someone up for my newsletter. But in flipping through the pages I recall sharp articles, feelings about a family moment, or future goals. To-do lists are every dozen pages or so. I've gleaned some sweet stuff from these snippets, pieces, and fractioned story lines. These notebooks are necessities. The color or design does not matter. It's the convenience and ease of use that makes the difference. Get one - any one - and carry it with you. One day you'll count your lucky stars you did. Hope Clark PS If you get FFWJunior, you also should be subscribed to FundsforWriters. The quality of markets is about the same. So why limit yourself to only the smaller markets? Write for both. Reach and expand your talent. Go for the big gold and the little silver. ARTICLE - TECHNICAL WRITING UNRAVELED ========================================================== By Alfred P.M. So you want a piece of the technical writing pie? Why not? It's delicious, it pays well, and it's not rocket science. Well, maybe it is for those people who write rocket science documents. You need five things to be a technical writer: 1) Excellent writing skills 2) Knowledge of a word processing tool 3) An inquisitive mind 4) Ability to process technical information 5) Ability to learn quickly Excellent Writing Skills I can almost hear you saying, "Duh!" You must have good writing skills if you want to be a good technical writer. In technical writing, you typically write for an audience that will use your product (or software) and you must use the appropriate language for that audience. If your audience consists of 10-year-olds, then using "big" words might impress adults but kids will totally ignore you. Technical writing takes a certain kind of mindset, just like humor, or travel writing. You can find out more about technical writing from the following sites. - http://www.raycomm.com/techwhirl -- Check out the articles and the archives of the mailing list. This website is an amazing source of information! - http://www.gary-conroy.com/index.php -- Check out the articles section for loads of articles on technical writing by an experienced technical writer. Knowledge of a Word-Processing Tool Most technical writers write using either Microsoft Word or Adobe Framemaker to create printed documents. If you plan to create online help (that neat help that you get when you press F1 in most of your Windows applications), you must use special tools like RoboHelp or WebWorks Publisher. So why do you need to know the tool? Because you will format the document, select the margins, make sure that the fonts are okay, and all that. If you normally write articles, most magazines do the formatting and layouts for you, but in technical writing you do everything. A sound knowledge of a word-processing tool is important. Microsoft Word, because of its penetration and wide use is probably a good tool to master. Check out http://www.mvps.org if you want to become an expert on Word. An Inquisitive Mind Technical writers interact with engineers, software developers, and other technical people. These people give you information from their point of view. However, you need to write for an audience, users who are often different from the sources of your information. The information you get is dependent upon the questions you ask, which depends upon your level of curiosity. You find the answers by asking the right questions. If you do your homework well, you will do fine in technical writing. Ability to Process Technical Information If you interact with technical people, you have to be able to understand technical information. You don't have to be a technology geek to do technical writing. Far from it! Many good technical writers hold degrees in English or Literature. Whatever your education, you need to understand technical information to write about it. If technical stuff intimidates you, but you're fascinated by it, then you can apply yourself and learn what yu need to know. But if you're intimidated by the thought of getting your hands bloody with dissecting technical information (okay, it's not THAT bad), then you're better off not venturing into technical writing. A willingness to learn is all it takes. A Desire to Learn Because you're digesting technical information and getting the information from technical people, you might need to learn additional jargon to understand what you're being told. This means a technical writer must have a desire to learn. Most learning, contrary to the way we studied and learned in school, takes place in doing and observing. In such situations, you must be able to learn the right things and learn them quickly. Being a quick study helps you put the information you acquire into perspective and gives the user information that he can understand. The Bottom Line You can be a great writer but you might not be good at understanding technical information. Or, you can be great at understanding technical information but you might not write well. To succeed in technical writing, you should be good at both. With a willingness to master both angles, the sky's the limit for you as a technical writer. ===== Bio - Alfred P M is a full-time technical writer and part- time freelancer living in Bangalore, India.
