Several years ago, my husband
and I built a home in the country. Country living was a new
way of life for us We had always lived within a small
village or a big city. We did not farm but enjoyed the
expanse of our acreage, the solitude as well as the beauty
of nature.
It was
so nice to be away from the city noises. Now we had plenty
of room to spread our wings. We decided that we needed a
barn to store our small Cub tractor as we had three acres of
land to mow. After that, we decided that we needed to put
in a line fence.
Our
nearest neighbor was a minister who was a delight to know.
He, his wife and two growing boys were always out and about
when they were not in their church ministry. They wanted
the line fence just as we did so we thought we would pay for
the materials and the minister said he had a friend in his
parish that would put the fence up for us.
Next
thing, we decided that a country place called for a dog. We
went shopping for dogs and finally found the very one that
hit our fancy. Laddie was a sweet collie dog. He became
more or less my dog. He was so affectionate which added a
lot to our lives. In a short time, a stray kitten joined him
to become his pal.
Life was
not to remain this mild for us. In a short time, my husband
had to have an angioplasty performed. Two arteries were
closed but one surgery took care of both. In four months,
they had closed so the surgery was performed, again. This
was done prior to the use of the stint.
My
husband did not feel all the much better. As time went by,
he contracted what the hospital doctor thought was
pneumonia. Not so. Further testing proved that he had a
malignant tumor in the right lung. After much soul
searching, he went through all the treatments and seemed to
be doing better but time was not on our side.
This all
took place in the fall of the year and by March of the
following year, he had become bedridden. In five short
weeks, our Savior called him home. Life has gone on for me
with the love of God, family and friends but I still enjoy
the memories of that time in the countryside.
