Encounter with Santa Claus
by
Nancee Donovan

Hi, Bob---This just happened to me last week. Thought you might be interested in hearing about it. I've been part of this organization since my friend, Rita, came up with the idea of us getting together as a sort of support group to do fun things together in hometown where we graduated from high school. Many of us live in this area (85 of us in
the same state). We attend wakes, send sympathy, birthday and even occasional "wedding" cards to each other. We keep in touch with the rest of our class women by email.

Here's my story-------

A couple years ago, one of our class members decided to start an organization for the women of our high school graduating class. We have had a very successful group to plan eat-outs, trips, scrapbooking, hikes, book club, and other interesting events.

Fifteen of us attended our recent Christmas Party at a local restaurant. As we were seated at a long table, parallel to the sidewalk, I happened to catch a glimpse of Santa walking by the window. I got excited, and pointing at the window, I exclaimed, "There's SANTA!!" Of course, the two gals across from me turned to look, realizing at the same time, they shouldn't as I was probably just trying to joke or distract them. Both were completely taken by surprise, when lo and behold, it WAS and they saw him the second they looked.

We all were laughing so hard at that end of the table, that the others asked what was so funny. We'd just finished telling them when ------HERE COMES SANTA CLAUS!! He walked right up to our table and put the big sack he had slung over his shoulder down by the table where we'd put our gifts to exchange after our meal.

Our group leader/Founder went over to him and asked if he had the right group, as none of us knew what he was doing there. He said, "Isn't this the Class of '59ers?" She told him it was and then he said something that made us believe he was the really GOOD SANTA, after all: "To look at you, I'd think it was the Class of SIXTY-nine!!" (We all "fell for him" then!)

He was GREAT!...... compliments, asking if we'd been good, having a list of our names and the exact amount of gifts with the special interests each of have (ex. I got an angel, a favorite with me, and another gal got a snowman, which she collects---How'd he KNOW?). We each got our picture taken with him, as many of us brought cameras. He looked so AUTHENTIC and seemed to know us, but we didn't recognize his accent (didn't sound like a native of NH). At first we thought he was somebody's husband, then a classmate, but ---guess not. Have NO IDEA who might have done this!

It was amazing to see a group of sixty-two year women turn into a bunch of 7-year-olds at the sight of Santa and his sack of gifts! It confirmed the beliefs of some of us and made true believers out of the rest!
