Make a Ripple - Make a Difference

Greetings, Ripplemakers

DIARY OF ONYX
By,
Clara Wersterfer

Granddaughter Jill, and her mother, Mary Lou, bring mama Chihuahua and three puppies from the vet where they had been delivered. One black female and two brown males. Someone said, "I"ll take the black one!" I looked around to see who said that, and it was me!

Aug 1, 2004

Little baby Onyx comes to her forever home with me. A tiny three pounds of black fur with attached tail constantly in motion. Sloppy kisses and sharp little teeth, cute barks and wet spots on the floor. She's a lap sitter!

Aug 1 Bedtime

Placed Onyx on the bed. She flopped on my pillow and passed out sound asleep in less than a minute. When I laid down, she was wide awake. Started giving me big ole wet kisses that continued all night. Whoa! What to do with an all night kissing dog? She awakened me with more kisses and a voracious appetite. She chewed my hair, fingers and ears. Piddled on carpet as soon as she was on the floor!

Aug 2

Filled tub for a bath. Onyx jumps in the water attacking the faucets and the stream of water. She begins dog paddling up and down the tub, stopping now and then to splash water with her little paws, grabbing wash cloth and shaking water everywhere. I remove her from tub, dry her off, turn my back, and she is back in the tub for an encore. She puts  her whole face under water, grabbing at the bubbles made by the running water.  There is no end to the time she will spend in the tub if allowed to stay.  If she isn't on my lap, she is a blur as she runs after our two old poodles, grabbing the fluffy hair on the back legs and holding them so they can't run. CeeCee, our big, yellow cat spends most of his time on a table or somewhere out of her reach.

Aug 2 Bedtime

Placed Onyx on the bed. She falls asleep and no more kissing. Hooray! I waken with her lying on my head, chewing hair.

Aug 3

First trip to vet for checkup. Onyx walks well on a leash, but balks at walking inside the vet office. She sits in the middle of the floor and howls.  Litterly throws her head back

and lets it rip. Howling continues every time she is touched by the vet or techs. It is loud and piercing. Three people hold her to take temp. Two hold her while she is examined.  Seven or eight people crowd in the room to see the "holy terror" She never shut up the entire time. Ear plugs were called for by the vet. When we leave I make mental note to send cookies to vet office.

Fast forward with repeats of Aug 1 +2 only worse as she learns more.

Oct 23

We lose Crissy, our oldest Poodle, who was 15 years. Onyx turns her attention to Prince, the male, and entertains him for hours. She seemed to sense he was grieving for Crissy and played heartily with him, leaving him no time for missing Crissy.

Nov 20

Onyx is growing like a weed, weighing ten pounds now. Larger than either of her parents. Onyx loves her tail. Immediately after her bath, she sits very still in front of the full length mirror and admires it.  Slowly she sneaks up on it and then pounces! Once she has it in her mouth  she won't let it go, laying on the floor and holding on for two or three minutes. She repeats this several times. Sometimes she spins until she becomes dizzy and falls down, still holding the tail.

Dec 16

Another trip to the vet. Onyx is chewing her feet. I know it's allergies, but need meds for it. She enters the door howling. Dr Mathis has to put a muzzle on her this time. She is determined to bite somebody and tries hard to find a hand. Still requires three persons to hold her.  Weighs twelve pounds.  Mental note to me. Buy cookies by the case.

Jan 20, 2005

Prince was left sitting on the sofa when the phone rang and I went to answer. He will not jump down so he began to bark. Onyx ran to him and started licking his face and then playing with him to keep him quiet until I  returned. She licked him once more and  jumped down, as if to say, "He's all yours."

Feb 20

All our many cats adore Onyx. They surround her when she goes out. We still keep her on a  long leash. The kitties wrestle with her, rolling in the grass and nipping each other. She guards the cat's water bowl,  and if one comes up to drink she growls  and barks at it to go away. She proclaims water rights to all containers of water.

March 12

We've had frequent rain showers. Onyx  is in heaven. She will stand in the rain for hours, licking the drops off the plant leaves or the grass. What is it with this dog and water?

April 13

Onyx gets her toe caught on something in the yard. It is bleeding badly, so guess what? Back to the vet. After treatment she is fitted with a collar that prevents her from getting to the toe to remove bandage. Now she thinks she has been earmarked for execution, screaming and whining without ceasing. Got her home and she runs under the table and won't come out. Sits and howls until I can no longer think. Taking an old sock and more gauze I wrap the bandaged toe and remove the collar. She walked holding the back leg up and never touched the bandage all night!

June 16

Her first birthday! We bought her a kiddie pool. What fun she has in it! Did I mention that Onyx also loves the hair dryer? Next to water, it's her favorite thing. As soon as I make her get out of the pool, or water sprinkler or even rain, she runs to my bathroom and barks until I get the hairdryer out of the drawer for her. What an experience it has been to have such a cute, smart, sweet little puppy. She has grown into a well-behaved, sensitive adult dog.
