Last Monday night, my
husband, Roy and I returned home after dark. Apparently, when we opened
the door to come inside an unexpected visitor entered our home with us. We
weren’t aware of its presence until my two cats, Blossom and Sunshine
began running up and down the hallway, jumping and meowing.
I heard Roy shout, “Oh
no… there’s a bird in the house.” About that time the misplaced bird flew
into my study. The two yellow cats were running close behind him. Roy was
concerned about the cats catching the bird, but I was more concerned about
the rotating ceiling fan chopping his head off.
“Get the cats!” Roy
shouted.
“Turn off the ceiling
fan,” I exclaimed. I stood up to grab a cat. About that time, however, I
noticed the bird was flying toward my computer monitor right beside me. I
had to dodge the bird in flight. It was a fiasco indeed! I ran around the
room, dodged the frightened bird, and screamed all at the same time.
God spoke to me during
this event. He showed me the importance of staying away from the places
where He doesn’t want me. God has a will for each of our lives. He has
certain places where He wants us and other places that we would be better
off avoiding.
God wants us to depend
on Him to guide us to the places where He would have us to be. We should
strive to stay in touch with God and listen to whatever message He has for
us. The fewer fiascos we have in life, the better.
I also decided that if
we step out of Gods will, we might, like the bird, find ourselves in
places where our enemies lurk. There are many people working overtime
trying to tear the Christian apart. Believe me, if my cats could have
gotten their paws on that innocent bird, feathers would have been flying.
That bird would have sung its last song.
You are probably
wondering how the story ended. Well… Roy managed to pull the chain on the
ceiling fan and grab both cats. He took them to the other room. Then when
he came back into my study he shut the door. He did all these things
while I screamed and dodged the flying creature, which was most definitely
attracted to my computer.
We propped open the
door to the outside. But for a few minutes the bird wouldn’t fly out. It
was determined to stay inside and near my computer. I wondered if it was
expecting an email. The bird continuously flew toward my computer, as it
circled the room.
How many times do we,
like the bird, go around circles? We run around instead of following God’s
leadership? We keep doing the same things over and over again. We worry
about the same old problems until the problems in our lives become all we
can think about. Then suddenly, and sometimes without warning, God does
exactly to us what we did with the bird. He turns off the light.
Roy turned off the
light in my study. I ran outside and turned on the carport light. As the
bird took its last lap in my study, it noticed the glowing light outside.
It did exactly what it should have done and flew out the door toward the
carport light.
The Bible tells us
that Jesus is the light of the world. When we get lost or when we become
frightened, we should, like the bird, fly toward the light. We should
spread our wings, invite God to become the wind beneath our wings, and
soar toward the light of the world, Jesus Christ.
The moral of this
story is this… if at all possible never stay in a place where the
adversary resides. But if you make a mistake and find yourselves among
those who would like to tear you apart or to chop your head off, won’t you
fly away from the evil doers just as quickly as possible.
Remember - It is only
in the light that the Christian can find complete peace, safety, and
security. And it is only in Jesus Christ that we can find our way to
Heaven. The smartest people in the world are those whom on a day-by-day
basis, turn away from the darkness and simply follow the light of
Jesus.
