It was approximately six months to my oldest
daughter’s wedding and she found herself in a hopeless situation regarding
school plans. Jaime had earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology but
wanted to pursue a degree in nursing.
She had taken all the
prerequisite courses to qualify for the extremely competitive program. A
part-time job at the hospital, as a care partner, gave her the experience
to hone her skills at patient care. She immediately felt the fulfillment
in making a positive difference in lives temporarily altered by illness.
She bonded with the hospital bound and knew this was her calling.
Then, the unexpected bad
news. A rejection letter explained that she wouldn’t be accepted to this
year’s nursing program but, perhaps, she could reapply at another time. I
reminded her that everything happens for a reason.
The bride to be and hopeful
student was in a quandary as to what to do. Should she wait it out or
maybe be more practical and go for her masters in psychology? With wedding
plans taking priority and needing her immediate attention, I gently
suggested she put all school matters on hold and enjoy all that wedding
planning entails. She wisely took my advice.
Her job at an insurance
company would be fine for now. It afforded her the ability to pay bills
and to purchase wedding extras. All was well.
A few weeks after the
wedding her thoughts again returned to school. She wanted out of the
insurance business but still wasn’t sure what courses to take at the local
college. She gave her two weeks notice at work, hoping that would force
her into making a life changing decision concerning her future. She didn’t
have to worry for long.
Within days a call she
never expected came. It was the supervisor of the nursing program. She was
calling to say that Jaime had been accepted into the program. Unbeknownst
to her, she was first on the list to be called if a space opened up. The
class would begin three weeks after her two weeks notice was given, giving
her the added bonus of a weeks break in between. All of this happening
less than two months after tying the knot.
Her voice was so incredibly
happy. She was more than excited to be sharing this incredible news with
me. Of course, my first response was to ask her if she said a prayer of
thanks to THE One who made this all possible.
Looking back, I see that
every decision helped to pave the way for this happy ending. And, I
realize that God had a plan all along - we just weren’t yet aware of what
He had in store for our grateful student. What seemed like an impossible
outcome turned into a true blessing. What seemed like set backs, at the
time, were actually the building blocks of God’s construction - what
would turn out to be Jaime’s future as a nurse. This was yet another
reminder that, when you accept Him and have faith in Him - nothing is
impossible for the Master planner of our lives.
