THE OWNERSHIP OF HENRI
By,
Louise Nomani
|
He slinks through my house with
yellow eyes that measure the universe and measure me as a
sidelight. One ear is flattened and follows the plane of
his head without a ripple. The other is of modest normalcy
and works as his weathervane to assess dangers on his turf. He
tilts his head just a little to catch me out of the corner of
his eye. He is hungry. He is a Panther on the prowl and
soundless as he moves from space to space. The crouch by
the chimney did not yield a mouse to wet his appetite. I
must rise and do his bidding.
He goads me to action; I have hesitated too
long. He extends the sharp claws on his feet into the
Oriental carpet and then looks me in the eye daring me to stay
in my chair.
Damn cat. Cat that stirs me from sleep at
5 a.m. in the morning and owns the bed at night time. Damn
cat that stirs me from my chair in the middle of a sentence.
Who wants Henri? Who owns Henri?
Damn cat came from the night and was like
a shadow moving with me and about me and tangling my feet.
He stayed the night and now taunts the sunshine with his
darkness. He takes the sun's energy and rushes through my
days giving dimension to the corners of my life. Then, it
is dark again, and by midnight he is lost once more in the folds
of the comforter. Who owns Henri?
Cat comes to me now. It is a benign
moment ,
and he looks at me with love
and devotion. He purrs with contentment. He rubs
against my legs and through my legs and tilts his head to look
up at me. He is a very black cat, and he sinks teeth, not
too gently, into my ankle. It is a gesture of affection, a
gesture of ruling. "Yes, of course, black cat. You
are mine and I am yours."
This Chat Noir will be a prince in this small kingdom, and will
rule me as he chooses. Damn cat. He owns me.
