Good Morning, Ripplemakers

Bologna Sandwiches (Part II)
By
Clara Wersterfer

After Tom passed away, Elizabeth would marry Reverend Sams. He loved and adored her, showering her with the attention she never received from Tom.  There was a fly in the ointment however. Preacher Sams was gone frequently to hold services at neighboring churches.  Sometimes the minister was sick or just needed time off. During those times Elizabeth would visit with her oldest daughter Dora and her husband Regan along with their only child, Bertha. Elizabeth doted on Bertha and went to many social events that Bertha enjoyed. Dora and Regan loved having her. Regan told many people how much he loved his mother-in-law.

Elizabeth had a very large mole on her cheek that she was ashamed of and constantly held her hand over it while talking. At one of the gatherings, a lady noticed and commented to Elizabeth that she could tie a thread around the mole and it would fall off after a few weeks. Elizabeth was eager to try it. A few days later if grew sore and painful.  Elizabeth went to her doctor, but it was too late. She died within the week from blood poison.

Elizabeth's service was at her husband's church.  There was a large crowd at her funeral and everyone noticed how distraught Elizabeth’s son in law, Regan seemed. When the mortician had the family pass by for a final viewing, Regan leaned down to kiss Elizabeth goodbye and collapsed into the casket. A doctor in the congregation pronounced him dead of a massive heart attack. The service for Elizabeth could not continue until the body of Regan was removed. Reverend Sams suggested they all adjourn to the outside where the final words and prayers were said.

The ambulance came for Regan and the attendants were astonished to see the big crowd standing outside. They had to wait until the service ended to remove Regan’s body.

Elizabeth might have led a boring life sitting home waiting for Tom to return, but there wasn't anything boring about her departure from this life!
