Make a Ripple - Make a Difference

Greetings, Ripplemakers

Harmony

Why is it that we can look all around us and find distrust, disrespect and everything seem like all is lost?

I would like to travel back into my childhood when beauty was seen from a child's' perspective. Times were tough for a lot of people as we were trying to emerge from the affects of the depression years.

I was not aware of these things as even though times were tough, I was fortunate to have caring parents who provided us with all the things that they could during those frugal years. I was not aware that we were poor as God lived in our home. Of course, like everyone else, we had our difficult times when we disagreed but we knew we loved and were loved, in return.

The simple life was the good life. We had a large yard where other children would gather to form a ball team. We might gather at the front steps to a front porch to let the older kids tell us ghost stories and run all the way home even though it may only be as long as two homes away. We developed our own fun by  playing store by gathering our wares and our playmates were our customers. Another delight was to take a shed and create a playhouse. We would sneak crackers out of the house for our snacks along with sweet well water. Playing dress up in an older sister's dresses was a treasure and especially if she would allow us to wear her high heeled shoes.

Am I touching a nerve here of memory? I hope so because my point is something that we do not see enough of today: Harmony.

Harmony was found in the trust that our parents knew that we were safe in our neighborhood; safe to go to school and hear the prayer recited before class began, go to a ballgame and hear the Star Spangles Banner played by the high school band and salute as they marched. One of the nicest things that I remember is seeing the men tip their hats to a lady. You seldom see that done anymore but I have seen my father do so many many times.

We as a family attended church and, even though we were a large family, there was harmony in the fact that we were taught to behave and enjoy the harmony of fellowship with believers. To me, harmony comes in a lot of ways; carrying another's load; singing with others; get-togethers; understanding and mostly walking along the road to the King's Highway.
