Good Morning, Ripplemakers

by
Bill Walker

The date was 14 August 1945.  I have forgotten the time, in the afternoon of that day in history, but the news came that Japan called for an end to that war.  A war like all wars, Hell on earth for millions of people. The experts tell how much in dollars, and lives lost, and lives turned upside down, but do the experts really know?

The experts do not talk to the people, the little people, who lost. The experts only deal in general terms.  These so called experts do not travel to some far out of the way place and talk to the general run of the mill people.  The people who lost a son, a daughter, a family member in war. The child who lost a father, a mother.  The child who lost both, a child who was found standing on a back road wondering what happened?

A war that was started by, hate, lust, and greed. A war that destroyed land, people, and lives forever. Things would never be the same again for millions of people.

Yes the experts, they always come up with figures, but the figures never tell the true stories.  The true stories of the little people. The true stories of a world gone mad.  A bomb is dropped, there are people killed, and wounded,   but then take it on down the line.  Those people have family members, that have their lives destroyed when the news comes that a family member was killed or wounded, or is missing. The days and nights of not knowing, the days and nights of terror.  It is enough to drive people crazy.  People that never lived these kinds of days, and nights, just can't understand.  It is like a man said to me the other day about things.  There are some things that cannot be learned by text books, there are things only learned by living through it.

Yes I remember the days of the Silver Stars Flags in a window of a home.  I also remember the day the Silver Star Flag was taken down and a Gold Star replaced it. Someone had a son or husband in service one day, then came the news that the son or husband had been killed in action.

Yes I remember 14 August 1945.  I also remember 7 December 1941.  All the days in between was days of hell turned loose on the world.  That is for the people of the United States.  For many others there was a date before 7 December 1941.

Well it is time to go get a watermelon.  I always try to have a watermelon on that date.  14 August 1945.  We had a watermelon that afternoon at home.  It was a quite an afternoon, that damn war was at last over.  Thank GOD.

This will tell you more about the silver and gold flags.
