Make a Ripple - Make a Difference

Greetings, Ripplemakers

Hi - Bye
by
Loren Moore

The door bell rang and little fox ran to the door.  She started barking to tell us that someone had come to see her.  Johnnie opened the door and there stood Nita, her best friend.  Nita open the storm door and stepped into the entrance hall.

???Hi Little Fox??? she said.  Then she took the four steps down the hall to the door of my office and called,

???Hi ??“ bye??? and before I could look up from my desk she was gone.

She and Johnnie had planed to go shopping this morning.  As Johnnie walked down the hall, she called to me, ???we??™ll eat lunch out today.  I??™ll be home before dark.???  And she was gone.

As the door closed little fox ran to the front window and started barking.  I called to her to stop barking, telling her that I didn??™t get to go either.  She came into the office and sat down.  She was just sitting there looking at me.  I could have sworn that her bottom lip was poked out and she was pouting.

Come to think about it my bottom lip was poking out also.  It was not that I wanted to go with Nita and Johnnie, but Nita usually took the time to come into the office and visit with me a few minutes before they left.

They couldn??™t have been in such a hurry that she didn??™t have time to say more then hi ??“ bye.  Maybe she was upset with me about something, but for the life of me I couldn??™t think of what it might be.  Nita loves chocolate and I keep a big box of Hershey bars on top of my gun safe.  Every so often I hand Nita three or four Hershey bars when she comes over.

I got to thinking about how long it had been since I had given her any Hershey bars.  I guess it had been a couple of weeks, so the next time she came over I would give her a few Hershey bars to see if that stopped this hi ??“ bye stuff.

The next week, I heard Johnnie on the phone making plans with Nita for them to go out again.  So I got four Hershey bars out of the box on the gun safe and put them in my desk drawer.

When the door bell rang, Little Fox ran to the door and started barking.  Johnnie opened the door and there stood Nita.  She opened the storm door and scratched little fox on the belly.  Then she called hi ??“ bye to me, but I was waiting for her this time.

???Hey wait a minute??? I hollered.  ???Come in here a minute.  I want to ask you something.???

Nita stuck her head in the office door and said, ???What????

???Don??™t you have time to come in and get your chocolate fix????

I held out the four Hershey bars and she came into the office with a big grin on her face.  She sat down and visited with me for five minutes while Johnnie stood a the office door waiting for her.  Finally she stood up and told me she had to go, that Johnnie was waiting for her.

So from now on, I know what to do when I get the hi ??“ bye routine.  I just dig out a few Hershey bars and have them ready for when Nita comes in.

Every so often I have to send Johnnie to Sam??™s club to buy another box of Hershey bars.  But with Johnnie and I eating them as well as giving some to Nita, we like to keep them on hand.  Even little fox demands a bite of chocolate any time some one is eating one.  If you think you can unwrap one without her hearing you.  You??™re just kidding yourself.

Then there was the time that Johnnie shut Little Fox in her bedroom, so she could eat her candy bar in peace.  But no, that??™s a whole ???nother story for a different time.
