Make a Ripple - Make a Difference

Greetings, Ripplemakers

C'Mere Doggie

Nanci Stroupe

It had been raining that morning when I got to school so I put my lunch in its paper bag up on the big stone fence that separated our school from a house next door.?  I didn't want my sandwich to get wet before lunch time.?  I think we were playing hop scotch that morning and when the bell rang for us to go in, I went running in with my friends.?  As soon as I got to my class I realized my lunch was not with me and the teacher let me go get it when lo and behold, the bag was gone and I heard a commotion going on in that yard and when I looked over the fence I saw a big ole dog and it was eating my lunch up, bag and all.

I was crying to beat the band and the lady who lived there came out to see what was wrong, I could really cry loud and the tears were falling.? ?  She kindly offered to fix me another lunch and I quickly accepted her offer.?  As I knew there would be no lunch for me unless I walked back?  home and this seemed like a better idea to me.?  She invited me into her kitchen and fixed me a nice sandwich and she even cut a big slice of chocolate?  cake with chocolate icing on top to go in my lunch.?  I was in heaven.?  I thanked her and she dried my tears and off I went to school and explained the situation to my understanding teacher.?  That had to be the best sandwich and cake I had ever eaten.?  We just didn't?  get cake in our lunch very often...... like never.

I must admit I was a pretty wise kid, well, in a house where I was the last of ten children you had to look out for yourself.?  And so......the next morning when I trotted off to school I had visions of chocolate cake for lunch again.?  I put my lunch in the same place and went off to play and when I came back, boy, was I disappointed, my lunch was still there.? ?  I looked and looked for the dog and even called for her.?  She was busy chewing on a bone and had no interest whatsoever in my lunch.?  I tried many times after that but to no avail.?  I will always remember that kind lady who made me lunch and her delicious chocolate cake.?  And I will never forgive that dog for not taking my lunch again.?  Lord knows, I tried.
