Greetings, Ripplemakers

Varmint Hunter La Stinko
by
Loren Moore

I told you about Sam, the butt biting dog that belongs to Ray and Frances in the story ???Varmint Hunter la Grand.

Well Sam got an allergy and was itching so bad that he was scratching all the time. Frances gave him a bath and put some medicine on him but it didn??™t help. So she took Sam to the vet for a shot. The vet commented on how good Sam smelled. Frances told the vet that she had just bathed him.

By the time Frances and Sam got home from the vet, Sam had quit scratching so the shot must have worked. Now Sam was back to his old self. He ran a few happy laps and, to show his appreciation, he nipped Ray in the seat of his pants. Ray couldn??™t keep from laughing and gave Sam a big hug.?  That wasn??™t hard to do with Sam smelling as good as he did. But doom and gloom were just around the corner, and no one knew it yet.

That night Sam took up his post on the porch to guard against the varmints of the night. It wasn??™t long before he spotted something moving down by the pond. Off he went after the varmint, barking a call for Ray to bring his shotgun.

When he got to the varmint it would not run from him. Instead it turned it??™s back on him and let him have it. Oh boy did that varmint let Sam have it. He sprayed Sam good with that stinkum that every skunk has.

Ray had heard Sam barking when he went running down to the pond so he had grabbed his Remington shotgun and started in that direction. When the skunk sprayed Sam, Sam came running back to Ray. Ray shot the skunk and started running back to the house, all the time telling Sam to go away.

Sam was going away all right, he just happened to be going away the same direction Ray was going. Frances had been outside on the porch, watching all this, and when she saw Sam and Ray running back to the porch she ran inside the house and locked the door.

Poor Sam was really sick for a couple of days and I??™m not going to say what happened to Ray. That??™s a whole ???nother story for a different time.

A few days later, Sam started barking and Ray said he wasn??™t going out to see what he had found this time. It was late afternoon and the sun hadn??™t gone down yet. Frances looked out the window and told Ray Sam must be feeling better, he just chased their old cat up a tree.
