There was a
news reporter I liked to watch on T.V. a few years back.
He was on the
tube on Sunday mornings. I would think you may remember him
to. He had a voice that told you a lot. Well you liked
hearing him. He would give you a short run down of the
news. Not much, but a little bit. Then he would take you
on a trip. You would be taken for a nice ride to some place
in these United States. The way he told the story, the way
the film was taken, you were there.
You almost
could say I have been to Shatter Valley. You see he knew
how to tell about someone or something in Shatter Valley.
He traveled about this nation, and he told the stories of
his travels.
He told about
things that happened, years ago in the history of this
nation at this spot, or house, or building. He told about
the people that made history. Things you will not get out
of a book. When he had signed off for that Sunday morning,
one could say, yes I was there, I seen history He also would
take you to some small out of the way place to meet a man or
woman you never heard of, but when after watching and
hearing the story, you knew that man or woman.
It seems like
he liked to meet people, set, hear the story of what ever
they do, have done, or what the hopes and dreams would be.
He as a rule picked out a common type person to tell about
on Sunday Mornings. That would not be hard to do. Seems
like God loves common people, made most people as just
common folk.
I remember
one such story, about a common man. He lived in a small
town in one of the southern states. It seems this man liked
kids. He fixed bikes for the poor kids of town that didn't
have one. He had a garage full of ones ready to be rode,
also a lot that needed a fix or two. He had a system it
worked. He said he grew up as a poor kid, never had one
himself. So when he grew older he set up shop for kids in
the same shape he had been in. The difference is these poor
kids can come get a bike for the day. The bikes are free to
use. Sign it out and sign it in when day is done. What a
kind hearted man, what a story. You felt good knowing Mr.
Mann. Well you did know him after that Sunday morning. You
had ridden the bus to this place, and heard the story of the
bike man.
After a
couple years of the Sunday Mornings with this man, you knew
more about the people and places of this land then you could
get with ten years of history and other things in some
college. You could say yes I??™ve been there, I got to meet
with those people. You see I traveled with Charles Kuralt
on Sunday Mornings on C.B.S.
