Calling the fishies
By Loren Moore
If you??™re not a fisherman you??™re not going to believe this. If you??™re just an amateur fisherman you??™re not going to believe this. If you??™re one of those professional fisherman that run around in those fancy bass boats with the big motors on them and fish in the bass tournaments then you??™re not going to believe this either.
One spring, when our group of eight went to our deer lease for the spring turkey season, Bob Schnee and I were the first to arrive. He and I had gone down a couple of days before season opened to open the cabin and get things ready for the other guys. We had to turn on the water well pump, turn on the butane and light the water heater.
We had stopped in Llano and bought groceries for the week. So we were all set up for the other guys. Now all we had to do was wait for them to get here. For supper I cooked some pan fried potatoes with diced onions and spam in them. Then just before I took them up I broke four eggs on top of the potatoes and stirred every thing together. When the eggs were done I took the potatoes up and put them in a bowl.
The next morning we got the Jeep out of the garage and decided we would go fishing. We put a five gallon bucket and our fishing gear in the back of the jeep and drove to M Moon Tank. On the way, we decided we would have a fish fry for supper that night. All the rest of the guys would be there for supper.
When we got to Moon Tank we fished for an hour and only caught four bass. Boy, if we couldn??™t do better then that it was going to be an awful skinny fish fry. So we drove over to Tom Smith Tank and fished there. After an hour we only had three more fish. We knew that seven fish wouldn??™t feed our bunch. Not the way they ate fish. But that??™s a whole nother story for a different time.
Now our lease is called East Graze Pasture and the lease next to ours was West Graze Pasture. Bob was a member of West Graze Pasture as well as East Graze Pasture, so we went to one of the tanks on West Graze. This tank was about two acres in size and always stayed muddy. But it had a lot of bass in it.
We fished for an hour and had not caught a fish. Bob said ???Loren let??™s go. We should try another tank.???
???Wait a minute, Bob. I want to try something.???
???What are you going to try???? Bob wanted to know.
???I??™m going to call the fish and tell them it is time to feed.???
???Yeah sure, Loren. You want to use my cell phone!???
I stood there at the edge of the water and whipped the water into a frenzy with my rod tip. Waited 30 seconds and cast my black spinner bait a short distance from the bank and caught a bass. Bob stood there with his mouth open.
???Bob close your fly trap and cast your plug about six foot out from the shore down that way.???
He did so and caught another bass. Then I whipped the water some more and we caught four more bass.
???I never saw any one do that before, Loren. Where did you learn to call fish????
???Where else, Bob? From my dad when I was a kid.???
