Make a Ripple - Make a Difference

Greetings, Ripplemakers

~ Westmoreland Dog ~

Back in the 1960s, a little dog showed up on the Kansas State highway # 99 south of the village of Westmoreland. Where this little dog came from no one ever knew.

I don't know how long it was till someone put up a little dog house along the West side of the road about a mile south of town. The reason being no one could get near the little dog. It would get close to a person and look them over, but no closer. People would stop and try to make friends with it, but it was a no go. The little dog was waiting for its own people. Others will not do.

Down the road was a small stream where the dog would go to get water. Sometimes when you would stop it would not be in sight. but wait a bit and here it would come and look you over.  He seemed to say "please, lay down whatever food you have with you, and you may leave." It made no matter what plans anyone had to trap the dog. It seemed to read your mind and have no part of it.

Now winter came and someone put bails of straw around the little dog house. The little dog lived like that for at least two years. And still no one ever came back to get this true blue dog. I often wonder how could any one have such a loyal dog. I would think after while it would think I cant take this any longer and would have taken up with someone. But no this little fellow was waiting. I'm not sure just how long it lived like that but I think it died from a broken heart.

I Always had hopes whoever it belonged to would come back and get it. When it died, someone buried the little dog at the fence line and put up a little cross, and a sign saying "little lost dog."

The cross and sign is long gone, but the fact is this was a True Blue Dog to someone who lost a good dog.
