FOURTH OF JULY
by
Melva Cooper
???What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord.???
Psalm 33:12 (NLT)
Picnics and Fireworks!
Better yet, a holiday from work.
If you are an American, these are two things that probably enter your mind when you think of the Fourth of July.
Here in our beloved United States we celebrate the fourth of July as the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. It has become the greatest secular holiday in the United States.
As flag waving Americans, we gladly show our patriotism to the red, white, and blue of that day. Across America at every festivity you will see Old Glory flying high in the air. Parades will have them extended from every angle on cars and other entries.
Many homes will, this day, proudly display the brilliant colors of the American flag. Some will be small and others quite large. It really doesn??™t matter. That beautiful piece of cloth created by Betsy Ross so many years ago, helps gird us together as a nation while our pride and loyalty beam forth for everyone to see.
It will be a special day that only comes once a year.
Now, more than ever, we need to come together as one body loving our God, our country, and one another. As we eat our hamburgers and bar-b-ques, drink our lemonade, and wave our flags, let us ever be mindful of the God of grace and love who has so graciously showered these gifts upon us.
Our myriad of nations around the world may have different birthdays, much like individuals celebrate their birth dates at unlike times. But, we as Christians from all nations can celebrate every day. Knowing Jesus as our Lord and Savior binds us together as a family. We are brothers and sisters in Christ, serving a triune God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
With gratefulness, flag waving Americans will honor their nation this Fourth of July.
With that same gratefulness we can celebrate, on this holiday and everyday, as a world-wide family of God, joined in spirit and soul and ministering joyfully as one body in His Holy Name.
