Catastrophes Call For Compassion
"This
is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Administer true justice;
show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the
widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your
hearts do not think evil of each other.'
Catastrophes bring out the best in most people; in a few men
and women it brings out the worst. Our nation has endured
some horrific occurrence in recent years, and we have seen
compassion, kindness and consideration, and an outpouring of
love. We have also seen a few incidents of lawlessness,
disorder, looting and mayhem.
Human
nature is not always predictable. There are occasions when
people will react in ways they would not normally. If ones
life is in danger, or the lives of their loved ones, they
may respond in extraordinary ways. If one is hungry or in
pain, or if their family is in the same dire distress, they
may waver from normal reactions.
Some,
though, show great strength in times of troubles. Their true
nature is multiplied many times over, and they reach out and
embrace those around them.
People
grouped together in like situations usually find a common
link that binds them and fosters goodwill. People can be
different in sex, class and creed or nationality and still
unite, coming together embracing the common link of
humanity. Sincerely caring about our fellow human beings
when they are down and out is compassion at its best.
God
commands us to show compassion and mercy, to help each other
and embrace our fellowman with our hearts and souls. Those
who are friends or strangers, those who are in need, we are
to show compassion, for that is what God commands.
Prayer:
God give us all a heart of caring and love for our fellow
man. Help us be compassionate people. Help us be more like
you. Amen.
