Loud thunder woke me up
at 2:47 a.m. this morning. The reason I
know what time it was is because I have
a clock/radio on the lamp table next to
my bed. I saw a flash of lightning out
the window and a few seconds later
another rumble of thunder.
We were in the middle of a drought
and haven??™t had rain in weeks. I was
happy to have a thunder storm coming to
water my yard. I haven??™t had so much
as a shower on my yard in three weeks.
Each morning I get up early and drag
out the water hose and sprinkler and
start watering the grass. I let it run
on this spot for 30 minutes and go move
it over so it will cover some more of
the yard. It takes five spots for the
sprinkler to cover the entire front
yard.
Then I have to do the same thing in
the back yard. By this time I??™m
exhausted and have to go back to bed. I
don??™t even have enough energy to eat a
peanut butter sandwich and drink a glass
of milk.
So you can see why I was happy to
have a thunder storm coming my way.
I got out of bed and went to the
front door to watch it rain. But when I
opened the door I saw that it had not
started yet. The lightning and thunder
were coming closer all the time though,
so it couldn??™t be long now.
Little fox came up behind me to see
what I was looking at, but she didn??™t
like the thunder so she went back to her
bed. Then Johnnie came to the door to
watch the rain with me. You would have
thought we had never seen rain before
the way we acted.
Well we stood there for 15 minutes
and it hadn??™t started raining yet,
although the lightning and thunder were
putting on quite a show. Johnnie told me
she was going back to bed and that left
me standing there by myself.
Even I get tired standing there after
a while and I closed the door, but I??™m
not sleepy now so I go in the kitchen
and get a big glass of milk and (yes you
guessed it) the Jif peanut butter jar
and a spoon and sit down at the table. I??™ve
been known as the peanut butter kid as
long as I can remember, I guess the name
is justified. But that??™s a whole
nother story for a different time.
As I sat there eating my peanut
butter out of the jar with a spoon and
drinking my milk, I realized that the
thunder was getting fainter. Now I
couldn??™t see any lightning out the
patio door and finally the thunder was
gone.
I got up and went back to the front
door. When I opened it I saw that we
hadn??™t gotten any rain, not a drop.
All my expectations had been denied. I
thought I might as well get dressed and
start pulling that water hose and
sprinkler out, because there was no
telling how long this drought would
last.
