A flock of Cedar Waxwings has been hanging around my
yard feeding on the elderberries. I am a certified bird
nerd. A bird geek is what I am and the waxwing is one of my
favorite birds. I love watching the Cedar Waxwings pass a
berry back and forth from bill to bill. Upon receiving the
berry, the gifted bird takes a step as though to leave the
limb they are perched upon. Then, as though it has changed
its mind, the bird takes a step and offers the berry back to
the giver. Now the bird with the berry repeats the actions
and the steps of the other bird before offering the berry to
its mate once more. It is sort of a Cedar Waxwing two-step.
A number of birds dance. I have
watched Sandhill Cranes do a joyous dance on a number of
occasions. One crane leaps into the air. Then another joins
the dance and then another. Soon all the birds are leaping
and dancing. Why do they do it? Maybe it is because they
are happy. Perhaps they dance because they are able. Most
likely, they dance because they feel like dancing. I
continue to watch as the berry is passed back and forth a
number of times, with a little dance included each time,
before one bird finally eats the berry.
The birds remind me that life is a give
and take proposition. Marriage certainly is. As a husband,
I have discovered that if I give enough, it may lead to a
little billing and cooing-maybe even a slice of key lime
pie. I am anything but a dancing fool. I've never cared all
that much about dancing, but my wife loves to dance??Ļand I
love her. So we dance. I guess being married is like
passing a berry from mouth to mouth and if a guy is smart,
he's going to do a little Cedar Waxwing two-step whenever he
can, especially if it makes his wife happy. It sure makes
me happy to watch these birds do their routines. What a
lovely bird the waxwing is. I have been told that life is
not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that
take our breath away. You can lead a pretty good life by
watching birds and doing a little dancing.
