As a child, my
parents kept two rocking chairs in our huge family kitchen that was heated
with a wood stove. Oftentimes, I have set on my daddy's lap; combing his
hair as he rocked the chair, his favorite way to recline after a long hard
day of toiling.
Sometimes this
old chair is my best friend. It will take me places where this old body
cannot go anymore. As I sail along with the rockers moving,
I go back into a time of yesterday when life was easier than it is
on these
old
bones.
I remember my
mother rocking me as a little one; me rocking my baby when she was an infant
and sometimes before she got too old for 'that old stuff,' and rocking my
nieces and nephews when I was elected, not hired, to watch them.
Now this old
rocker soothes my mind and soul as it will move along and keep my mind
active. I do my best thinking, my best dreaming, and my best
praying
within the bounds of this old rocker.
When I was
younger, it was a porch swing that took my fancy, but today
just
give me an old rocking chair and you will find one happy camper, camping
where the wood meets the carpet.

HISTORY OF THE
ROCKING CHAIR:
The rocking
chair seems to have originated in England in the early to mid 1700's. By
1745 the rocking chair was mostly used as garden chairs. However, it was the
American influence of the rocking chair that made it so popular. The Windsor
antique rocking chair built in
Philadelphia,
eventually became known worldwide. This rocker chair was introduced to the
American colonies around 1750. These rocker chairs have evolved into some of
the most popular style porch rocker chairs today. |
