In 2000, I served two
semesters as an adjunct for a local university. I taught the first
education course, which was listed as diversity but was essentially
"everything"! I actually rolled a suitcase to class, so that my
cooperative learning groups would have downloads and library books to
use.
One of my students was a single mom. In addition to helping her find an
internship, I arranged for her to substitute at the high school where I
was an administrator. This would bring in a few extra dollars. She was
a good student. Her car, however, was old, including its battery.
One day, after teaching, she discovered her headlights left on!
No start. Late for chemistry lab? She ran into my office for
assistance. I did not have cables, but could help her search the
building asap for someone who might. We left my office by its side
door. At that instant a teacher was walking by. I never thought that
he would have cables, but asked. "I have something better!" He grabbed
his red charging box, a device which I have now acquired, too. After a
long plug-in time, this box, with two cable clamps, can start several
cars! No need for another car or for long cables! We hurried directly
to the lot and started the car within a couple of minutes. My student
was on her way--on time!
What were the "chances" that Tom would be by my door at the second that
we walked out? What were the chances that he would be a teacher who
would have such a device? My answer is that there are no "chances" in
life, no accidents!
That afternoon, I hurried to the Fatima Shrine in Lewiston, NY, to its
bookstore and purchased a Bible. That evening I read Psalm 91 to my
student's class. I urged my students all to place themselves under
the care of the God in Psalm 91.
He has battery chargers!
