What's new under the
sun?
There's some
disagreement as to who created the very first sunscreen.
There's no debate, however, that today's innovators are
offering an array of new ingredients for safer, more effective
sun protection.
"For
consumers to make wise choices about sun protection,
it's important that they understand the science behind
it," says Dr. Goodlerner. Ultraviolet light is measured
in wavelengths: UVA, UVB and UVC. While UVC is the most
dangerous, it is normally filtered out by the ozone layer.
UVB is
variable based on weather conditions, and it's strongest in
summer between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. UVA, on the other
hand, has the same intensity year-round. Plus, it penetrates
through some clothing. "UVA is associated with wrinkles,
changes in connective tissue, rosacea and skin cancer,"
says Dr. Goodlerner.
Truly
effective sun protection includes 'broad spectrum' sunscreen.
"One of the best options available is micronized zinc
