Tomato Loving Dog

by Cheryl Williams

I don't quite know what it is about my dog and tomatoes.  But he loves them.  Not the raw variety mind you, but anything which involves tomato sauce.  His favorite is spaghetti and meatballs.  I discovered this quite by accident one day when I left my plate sitting on the table near the sofa one evening to go and get and glass of water.  I came back and "Poof!"  My plate was empty.  I found my dear little Bugsy staring at me, licking the sauce that was dripping from his chin.  And the look on his face was not one of guilt, but rather, "Hey...got any more of that stuff?"

Now whenever I am making homemade spaghetti, it's like he has a sixth sense.  For the entire time I am working in the kitchen, he just sits and stares at me, licking his chops.  He knows it's coming sometime before the night is through.  And he waits patiently.  Only now, I'm very careful not to leave my plate where he can get to it.  Now, I just make him his own plate, minus the garlic bread and salad.

I thought at first his taste was only for spaghetti.  But I found out that he also loves chili (although chili does NOT like him), and sloppy joes.  He will eat salsa, and he loves tomato soup.  He doesn't like fish, and he only likes certain kinds of chicken and beef.  When I give him dog food, he looks at me as if to say, "You've GOT to be kidding."  And he won't eat it...at least not until his stomach is rumbling and he knows its that or nothing.

Yes, Bugsy is my little tomato loving dog.  And tonight was spaghetti night.  He is sleeping at my feet as I Gather, full and content.  And I know he's thinking life just doesn't get much better than this.
