Anguish
Revisited
© 2007
Julie Jordan Scott
I put my red-and-yellow-and-white ski sweater into
the suitcase, one of my warmest articles of clothing
in preparation for our visit to Flagstaff, Arizona, a
place usually much colder than home here
in Bakersfield.
I kept my hand on it for a moment longer than the
norm and Katherine caught my moment both with
her eyes and in her heart.
"You washed it, huh, Mommy."
"Mmmm hmmmm" I said, still looking at the sweater,
traces of wistfulness filling my eyes.
"It doesn't smell like the fire anymore, does it?"
She wondered.
"No, it doesn't, honey. It smells like laundry-clean."
She walked over and gave me a hug, my ever wise,
ever knowing barely fifteen-year-old daughter.
I wore this sweater at an unusual winter fire, nestled in
the hillsides outside Bakersfield in the special
fire pit
created by My Muse for me. That fire-night was the
night of anguished seeds of renewal. That fire-night
was sacred and special, like every other fire-night.
I knew when I washed the sweater I would wash away
the last physical remnants from that night.
It's funny how we get attached to things – to experiences,
to people, to stuff – when what is the most important isn't
something we can hold onto at all. It is what is felt in the
heart, as Helen Keller told us, "The best and most beautiful
things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they
must be felt with the heart."
I wrote of just a snippet of that time by the fire in my
morning pages and then posted those to several of my
blogs, mostly because I adored the writing – how it
flowed and how it communicated my anguish.
What I wasn't prepared for was how concerned
people became about me – so much so that I
almost wish I had put a disclaimer at the top of
the writing. "This was a moment of very deep
feeling which I am continuing to process and I
am not staying in that deep anguish feeling, I
am learning and growing from it."
Interestingly enough, in retrospect I find the
anguish I felt to be part of the most beautiful
things that Helen Keller speaks so eloquently
about in her quote. I am grateful for that exact
moment, I am grateful for the words and imagery
that were birthed as a result, I am grateful for
the ongoing learning.
And I am sad that my sweater now smells
laundry-clean. I enjoyed carrying the
fire-smell with me. Perhaps it is time to
create fire again.

One of my most empowering experiences of
2006 was a photo session with an incredibly
talented artist, Leigh Vega. She took one of
my favorite photos of me of all time, entitled

The Second Chakra
Seat Of Life
Robin Lee
When we
have gained a deep understanding of the body and soul, there often follows a
desire to reach out, to grow, and to change. In the Vedic texts, the second
chakra, the energy center between the navel and genitals, is the seat of life
and the house of change. It is a point where opposites come together in
sympathy, guiding us toward a balanced existence. The choices that help us
evolve are often a product of the second chakra, which, when charged with
neither too little nor too much energy, rejects rigid control and embraces
creativity. Associated with taste and sensuality, the second chakra or
Svadhisthana (which means sweetness) can be visualized as a brilliant sunset
orange. Like its element, water, the second chakra is ruled by the moon.
A weakness or imbalance in the second chakra can lead to feelings of extreme
empathy, which can cause you to be ruled by the emotions of others. To fail to
focus on this chakra leads to the opposite: an utter lack of emotion and
dwindling passions. A balanced second chakra embraces both sides of everything,
giving you a healthy understanding of your emotions as well as those of others.
Nurturing it through dance, laughter, and pleasurable movement will help you
embrace your own sexuality, which is the main aspect of the chakra. Stimulation
of the second chakra can be achieved through the use of orris root, gardenia,
or damiana incense; practicing tantra yoga; or exposing the chakra to moonstone
or coral. These methods of opening and energizing the chakra can be performed
individually or in tandem for greater effect.
The second chakra may appear a route to indulgence to some, because of its
focus on the feelings of the body, but it is also the dwelling place of the
self. A fully functioning second chakra, working in a balanced way with the
body’s other chakras, is a source of self-knowledge and understanding.

A World Unseen
Cynthia Groopman
Colors so vivid and bright,
Being bathed in glowing lights.
Signs in stores of every kind,
Are figments of the imagination for those who happen to be blind.
A smile as beautiful as a budding flower,
Evokes deep spiritual power.
Body language and communication in nonverbal ways,
Causes visually impaired people to dwell in a world of a maze.
For touch, smell and of course sound are important,
to those living in a world of the unseen,
Thus creating a tapestry of understandable themes.

Children of God are We
Cynthia
Groopman
Children of God are we all,
Matters not whether we are disabled, big or small.
Created in a very special way, are we,
For God has gifted us with such noble qualities.
Members of the human family we lovingly are,
Whether we live near or far.
Differences are not barriers to love and appreciation of each other,
For in God's eyes, we are all sisters and brothers.
So dear spiritual family, let us join hands,
And with sunshine smiles and joy,
We shall mirthfully enjoy God's precious lands.

Be Of Great Courage
Cynthia Groopman
Be of great courage, my dear,
Please do not tremble or fear.
Soothing your weary heart and doleful soul,
Is God's healing power, making you whole.
Be not distressed,
For hidden in sorrows' gloomy clouds is the flame of happiness.
Yield not to your pessimistic expectations,
For during the darkest hours of life's storms,
Are budding glows of the rainbow's elation.
As God holds your hand,
He will safely guide you as you gradually enter recovery land.
Thus prayer has such enormous might and magnificent power,
Blossoming and thriving like a flourishing flower.

Readers Feedback
Jan – 26 - Carol, Thanks for
including me in Storytime today. It is such a blessing to be
a part of this family of writers. I hope that you have a wonderful
weekend
my friend. wishing you every joy, Joe
I love Sharon Bryant's story about TROY....Vance
Agee
Carol,
Please thank Cheryl Williams for her article. I would
like to remind her and your other readers the opposite could have happened to
that (and any other) overweight child. My parents were overly critical of
my sister who happened to be on the heavier side. I internalized the pain
of seeing my parents torture her like that and as a result wound up to be a
very thin child. Luckily my sister is taking a healthier lifestyle and
working out on a regular basis. So, parents, be advised your children may
also wind up anoxeric or bulimic if you insist on force-feeding your children
on eating all healthy foods to early despite the best of your intentions.
Thanks for letting me voice my opinions on this very important topic.
Sincerely,
David Fox
