Grandma
David Cannon
My Grandma had a wicked sense of humor. And always enjoyed playing pranks, but
I always paid her back. She was a marvelous cook, her kitchen full of enticing
smells. She liked to experiment, and we where never sure what to expect to find
next floating around in one of her stews. But whatever it was, it was delicious
anyhow. Grandma was a bit of an eccentric and always full of suprise. We never
knew what she would get up to next.
We teased her over her abnormal amount of hats. They ranged from the sensibly
neat, to the hideous. I have never needed photographs to remember her face. She
always stayed in my mind along with her laughter. We laughed so much at times
Grandma would need to 'sit down'. Grandma always made me feel good, she knew
exactly what to say when we where sad or worried. Gran made everything OK Just
to hear her voice made me smile. And I loved to hear her sing as she busied
herself around the house. Even though she sounded like a 'strangled cat', and
her lyrics where bizarre to say the least.
We would sit for hours and listen to her stories about her childhood and the
war. Gran had a younger sister called 'May' they looked like twins and did
everything together. When they where children my Gran told me many story about
the mischief they both got into. And things never changed when they grew older.
But May died, and Grans spark fizzled out. She missed her so much.
Gran's health deteriorated, and doctors said she would not see 60yrs. She
celebrated her ruby wedding and my grandfather bought her a Ruby ring, Gran was
"over the moon" and a few months later celebrated her 60th birthday
on the 8th of April. Grandma was glad to have reached 60yrs and we all made it a
big occasion as it was a day we did not expect to see. But sadly on the 24th of
April Gran died. The weekend that she took ill, and passed away was very
strange. I was due to spend it with her and my grandfather as I always did. I
cannot even remember why I changed my plans now. However I did not go. My
grandfather believed it was meant to be that way. As to see my Gran collapse
would have devastated me. Gran then slipped into a coma and died. I only wish I
could have said goodbye. And tell her how much I loved her.
On the day of the funeral my grandfather passed me an envelope with my name
written on it and a smiley face drawn in lipstick. He said "she wanted to
surprise you" I opened it and inside was some money along with a letter
written on a little piece of paper that said:
Have saved up a few pounds for
your school trip.
I know your mum can’t afford to give
it to you.
Love Nan XXXXX
I cried so much the letter became damp. I just wanted to tell her thank you.
(Tell the truth I am crying as I write this)
I miss you Nan
